Job Description

Join our fast-paced and passionate team as an Automation Electro-Mechanical Designer / Integrator 2. As we scale, you will be instrumental in building our foundation from the ground up. This is a dynamic, hands-on role for a self-starter who thrives in a fluid startup environment. You'll have the opportunity to work on cutting edge technologies, work closely with leadership, and develop and implement engineering practices that support our mission and growth.

You will help design and build automated capital equipment and assembly machines. This role owns the electrical, controls, power, and electro-mechanical integration design for those machines. You'll help move machine design off ad hoc, single-person effort and onto documented standards: clean schematics under revision control, organized power distribution, managed cabling, defined safety specifications, and electrical drawings that assemble correctly the first time.

You will work across mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines, so breadth matters more than deep specialization in any single area. This is a self-directed position. You are expected to define scope, set standards, and drive projects from concept through build and commissioning.

Your key responsibilities are as follows:

System electrical schematics and documentation

  • Own the creation, improvement, and maintenance of system-level electrical schematics and wiring diagrams using software tools such as Visio and Altium.
  • Improve the quality, clarity, and consistency of existing high-level electrical diagrams.

Power distribution

  • Architect centralized AC and DC power distribution for machines built from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components.
  • Scope includes control-panel layout, DC power-supply consolidation, circuit protection, terminal blocks, and grounding.
  • Replace point-to-point 120 V wall-outlet wiring with organized distribution that simplifies machine wiring and reduces assembly time.

Cable management

  • Design and implement cable management solutions for automated machinery, including cable carrier (energy chain) selection, harness length specification, strain relief, and routing.
  • Address both static routing and moving-axis applications.

Machine safety

  • Develop and maintain machine safety specifications and documentation, including laser safety compliance and motion safety design.
  • Specify and document interlocks, emergency stops, guarding, and related safety systems.

 Project management

  • Plan and drive projects independently from concept through build and commissioning.
  • Coordinate across mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines and manage schedules, vendors, and bills of material.

Requirements

  • This position requires access to export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).

Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Automation/Controls Engineering, or an associate degree / technical diploma
  • 3+ years designing capital equipment or automated assembly machines.

Skills:

  • Strong electrical design skills: reading and producing schematics, wiring diagrams, power distribution, and control-panel layouts.
  • Proficiency in Altium
  • Prefer experience with SolidWorks Electrical and/or Visio for schematic capture.
  • Prefer familiarity with laser safety standards (for example ANSI Z136, IEC 60825) and machine/motion safety standards (for example ISO 13849, NFPA 79, and OSHA lockout/tagout).
  • Prefer experience selecting cable carriers / energy chains for moving-axis applications.
  • Prefer Experience integrating COTS automation components such as motion controllers, servo and stepper drives, and PLCs.

Startup Mindset:

  • You're creative, flexible, and eager to wear multiple hats.
  • You're passionate about building systems from the ground up and comfortable with ambiguity and change.

Success in the First Year:

  • Machine electrical schematics and wiring diagrams are documented, standardized, and under revision control, with ownership distributed across a defined process.
  • Machines deployed with organized AC/DC power distribution and managed cabling in place of ad hoc wall-outlet wiring.
  • Documented safety specifications exist for laser and motion hazards.

Benefits

The expected annual salary range for this position is $85,000-$125,000.

As a full-time employee, you will be eligible for Monarch’s comprehensive benefits package, which includes:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with 4% employer matching
  • 20 paid time off (PTO) days per year
  • 13 paid company holidays
  • 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off)
