Functions

Job responsibilities include leading a team of mechanical engineers and designers to develop and manage the design of major Government and Commercial Programs. Responsible areas include but not limited to aux piping systems, propulsion systems, and HVAC as well as oversight of the piping production engineering development efforts. Reviewing System/Mechanical designs and calculations to find potential construction issues, interacting with other professionals and Departments of the Shipyard, when issues arise and using engineering knowledge and experience to properly research or calculate the correct solutions. Time will be spent researching and interpreting regulatory body documents, contract specifications and other requirements as dictated by the contract or other Company Departments. AutoCAD experience will be required to visualize equipment placement, structural changes, interference with other equipment and offer proper solutions.

  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, and weekends if necessary.
  • Responsible for producing and revieing auxiliary arrangement designs in a 2D and 3D software environment.
  • Coordinates and interacts with other design disciplines, clients, vendors, and craft superintendents when necessary.
  • Supervise and lead a group of designers, drafters, and engineers in the engineering group, assigning tasks per schedule, production needs and maintaining close tracks of hours used per assigned budget.
  • Prepare schedules for undertaking the assigned engineering work.
  • Apply standard design principles and theories to complete assignments.
  • Supervise the proper development of contract change documents to support project needs.
  • Create and develop production/fabrication drawings of outfitting.
  • Responsible for identifying dimensions, arrangements, equipment, and materials in the production drawings.
  • Ensure compliance with required design safety factors, tolerances, and specifications.
  • Compile data and perform dimensional and routine calculations required for the preparation of drawings.
  • Make required changes, additions, and/or revisions, as directed by immediate supervisor.
  • Preparation of drawings for class approval
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly and/or indirectly supervise employees assigned to the Outfitting Group. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Reporting Relationship

This position will report to Director of Engineering

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university or college. A minimum of 10+ years of experience in the marine industry with system design experience for all types of marine applications.

Skills: Sizing of mechanical components, developing design drawings and/or 3D modeling using CAD/CAM Software's, and having assisted production efforts during the construction of the vessels at various stages, including ship checks and verification of as-built conditions. Proficiency in performing, accessing, and using 2D/3D software to handle various types of formatted Documents such as PDS/Adobe, etc., for verification of Vendor Data, Structural and Vessel Component and Machinery Arrangements, Mechanical Drawings such as Piping and HVAC, Production Packages and Schedules, etc.

Must have wide knowledge of Classification Rules, International codes, and standards such as: ABS SVRs, MVRs and NVR, DNV, API, AISC, ASTM, ISO, SAWE RP 14, and MIL Standards, among others.

Intermediate to Advanced level Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Project, and AutoCAD required. Familiarity with FORAN, Ship Constructor, software is desired but not required. Knowledge of Engineering Software's as FEA Software, CFDs, Pipe-Flow and Pipe-Flo as well as use of Caesar II is desired. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, clients, and government officials. Must have accurate written and verbal communication skills to carry out and understand assignments, and/or convey or exchange routine information. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment as a team player.

Must have a proven record of problem solving in the marine engineering field. This would include significant experience in areas of marine piping systems and system control logic, HVAC systems, propulsion systems and overall ship marine system design.

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Card required.

Desired

Combination of commercial and government shipyard experience in large government shipbuilding (design/build) program preferred, other major defense programs will be considered. Experience working within the Earned Value Management System is also a plus.
