ETTAN Ettan opened in 2020 to much acclaim as the first Cal-Indian restaurant of its kind by Michelin starred chef Srijith Gopinathan and restaurateur Ayesha Thapar who have since gone on to open Copra in San Francisco and Eylan in Menlo Park. Ettan celebrates the bounty of California in the context of the rich cultural and culinary traditions of India. JOB SUMMARY Ettan currently has an opening for a part-time server. In addition to embodying the company core values, the Server role works in collaboration with the Backwaiter and floor staff to provide an exceptional, efficient dining experience for Ettan guests. This position serves as the primary point of contact for guests, leading the flow of their dining experience, answering menu questions, troubleshooting any issues and communicating with the kitchen and floor staff to optimize the flow of service. This job description reflects the general level and nature of the job. It is not intended to be all inclusive. PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Extend a genuine welcome and good-bye to all Ettan guests Work with a team mentality, looking out for the best interest of the whole team Execute the company steps of service per company standard Work with a sense of urgency Adhere to company dress code Come prepared with required work tools Know table and seat numbers, standard and special table arrangements Perform opening/closing server duties Oversee specific section of tables while also assisting fellow servers as possible Operate POS for: starting checks, inputting orders; coursing orders correctly; and closing checks Process credit card, cash and gift card payments Maintain awareness of the status of the restaurant as a whole during service to optimize collaboration and flow of service Maintain in depth knowledge of Ettan's beer, wine, cocktails, and spirits Maintain in depth knowledge of Ettan’s food menu; awareness of dishes with potential allergens; ability to describe dishes, answer guest questions confidently and build an ideal menu for the table Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the service areas and restaurant in general Communicate with management about any disappointed guest experiences or special praise for their Ettan experience Assist in training of new floor staff SECONDARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Complete daily set-up, breakdown and side work Participate in daily lineup discussions Attend food & beverage education sessions as available KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES - REQUIRED Ability to effectively communicate with staff in both front of house and back of house Ability to maintain calm and focus under pressure Clear sense of time management skills before, during, and after service Solid foundation of spirit, cocktail, beer & wine knowledge - a willingness to deepen knowledge in each of these categories Approach tasks with a sense of urgency Speak with respect and professionalism Arrive on time Must be authorized to work in the United States Current Food Handler, Responsible Beverage and Unlawful Harassment training certificates Use & keep up to date with technology used for operations; 7shifts, PayEntry, TipHaus KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES – PREFERRED Experience in a Michelin rated or James Beard nominated restaurant Experience in high volume high performance restaurant environments WSET 1 or 2 certified PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical requirements listed are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Interpret and follow a variety of instructions and procedures furnished in written and oral formats Work under pressure with changing, ambiguous priorities Auditory and visual skills – Specific vision abilities required by this job includeclose vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus Ability to work additional hours or shifts occasionally at the last minute Ability to perform moderately strenuous physical work and repetitive hand and arm motions Understand and respond to staff requests in a loud environment EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK: Shift times vary based on hours the restaurant is open.
