Job Description

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.

We’re looking for Battery Design Engineers (all levels) to architect and build highly integrated electromechanical hardware for micro-mobility battery systems. This is a high ownership engineering role spanning the full product lifecycle: you will own hardware from initial concept and prototyping through production launch, ensuring high levels of performance, reliability and safety. You will own the integration of structural, thermal, electrical, manufacturing, and packaging requirements into a cohesive battery system that can be built reliably at scale.

You should be equally comfortable working through first-principles architecture decisions, detailed CAD and drawing release work, prototype builds, manufacturing problem-solving, and supplier collaboration.

What You Will Do

  • Own complex battery subassemblies or full systems (depending on level) from concept to prototype, validation, and production launch

  • Design and integrate battery pack hardware including enclosures, busbars, cooling systems, PCBAs, connectors, HV interfaces, and structural components — balancing thermal, structural, electrical, manufacturing, and packaging constraints simultaneously.

  • Own top-level assemblies, tolerance strategy, 2D drawings, and engineering release of complex 3D assemblies

  • Rapidly down-select concepts through first-principles analysis,hands-on prototyping, and tight test-iterate loops. Comfortable moving from early mockups to production CAD.

  • Design for scalable manufacturing without compromising performance or safety from day one. Work directly with suppliers and CMs on tooling, process development, assembly strategy, and production ramp. Root-cause manufacturing and field issues across mechanical, thermal, and electrical domains.

  • You'll be an early member of a growing battery engineering team. How you work — your rigor, your speed, your standards — sets the bar for the engineers who come after you.

What You Will Bring

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • Ability to bound problems from first principles — thermal, structural, and electrical — with back-of-envelope calcs before reaching for simulation tools

  • Proven track record designing and releasing complex electromechanical products from concept through production — battery packs, high-density electronics packaging, or similarly constrained assemblies

  • Fluency with advanced 3D modeling software. CATIA V6 / 3DX preferred

  • Ability to produce production-quality 2D drawings with rigorous GD&T

  • Manufacturing process knowledge: welding, stamping, molding, fasteners, adhesives, TIMs, and mechanical joining — with DFM and DFA instincts applied from the first concept, not the last review

  • Hands-on builder — comfortable in the lab prototyping, debugging, and validating hardware directly, not just reviewing test reports

  • Working knowledge of how cell behavior, thermal limits, and electrical integration drive pack mechanical architecture; experience with FEA (structural and thermal) tools such as Ansys or Altair

Bonus Points

  • Experience designing battery packs for EVs, powersports, micromobility, or other electrified platforms

  • Experience with automated manufacturing and high-volume assembly systems

  • Familiarity with lithium-ion cell characterization and selection

  • Experience working directly with Asian suppliers or contract manufacturers

  • Experience supporting factory launch or production ramp activities

  • Familiarity with battery safety and abuse testing standards

Perks and Benefits

  • Robust health coverage. Excellent health, dental and vision insurance covered up to 100% by Also. with FSA & HSA options.

  • One Medical membership and dedicated insurance advocates.

  • Rich fertility and family building benefits with Progyny.

  • Flexible time off.

  • 401(k) match.

Why ALSO.

We’re passionate about helping the world find a better way to get there—wherever it is you’re headed.

We’re located in the heart of Silicon Valley and have brought together a world-class team from some of the biggest brands in the technology, automotive, cycling, outdoor recreation and retail spaces.

Together we’re working hands-on to imagine, design and build an entirely new solution to a global set of transportation challenges.
