What We Offer

This is an on-call position, which means it is a part-time, hourly role. This position will work no more than 39 hours per week. The payrate for this position is $20.31/hour and is eligible to enroll in the City and County of Denver’s 457b retirement plan. This position is not eligible for other additional benefits.

Location and Schedule

In this position, you can expect to work on-site at various program locations based on business need. Program staff work at our warehouse (4601 W. 46th, Denver) to gather gear and then head to any of Denver’s bike trails, recreation centers, or other cycling locations. Programs are offered on weekdays and weekends. On‐call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.

What You’ll Do

The Department of Parks and Recreation’s Alternative Sports team is gearing up for the best summer program season yet! The Alternative Sports program team is seeking Activity Leaders for the bicycle education program that teaches riding skills, basic bicycle maintenance, and bicycle safety. This program, designed for Denver’s bicycle community, encourages healthy physical activity and promotes growth in various life and leadership skills.

Participants who attend classes will learn bike safety, maintenance, urban/neighborhood riding, and navigation while exploring fun and exciting urban spaces, including parks, recreation centers, and outdoor pools. Bicycle Education Program Leaders play a key role in ensuring that all cyclists have the skills necessary to be safe and enjoy cycling as a lifelong skill!

Staffing needs vary season to season, with spring–fall being the busiest time of the year for programs. Activity Leaders are paid $20.31/hour.

Key Responsibilities of the Bicycle Education Program Leader include:

  • Coordinating, and implementing activities and lessons for program participants while ensuring a fun and safe learning environment

  • Overseeing bicycle program administrative duties including organizing of activity calendars, completing reports, auditing participant paperwork, and responding to email and phone call inquiries

  • Shopping for needed supplies and materials within a monthly budget, delivering and distributing necessary gear and equipment for each site

  • Teaching the work group necessary technical skills for successful, safe bicycle riding and route planning; observing programming and participant safety briefings

  • Monitoring weather and making alternative plans in the event of severe or inclement weather

  • Mentoring instructors and site leads, providing feedback to help develop their facilitation and leadership skills

  • Ensuring staff are meeting expectations and job requirements; report any staff issues to supervisor/coordinators if they arise

  • Maintaining a positive group atmosphere in which all participants are welcomed, included, and supported

  • Identifying and minimizing environmental risks; following policies and procedures as set forth by DPR

  • Responding to emergencies and provide patient care; being prepared to summon help and initiate rescue

  • Driving department vehicles including trucks with trailer in tow and 15-passenger mini-buses with participants

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate will be a well-rounded outdoor enthusiast with extensive personal and/or professional outdoor recreation experience in bicycle instruction. Our ideal candidate will have reliable transportation to lead activities throughout our extensive program service area and will be able to participate in our activity-specific in-house trainings provided throughout the season. In addition, our ideal candidate will have some administrative experience in a bicycle education program.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • 2 years of instruction and planning experience in recreational biking and urban/street biking

  • Experience in bicycle safety, bicycle building, and/or bicycle maintenance

  • Open availability during the summer programming months

  • Experience working with youth and adults in a recreation setting

  • Ability to attend in-house trainings

  • Ability to attend Defensive Driving and Coaching and Van Driver training

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of experience (paid or volunteer) as an instructor in an organized specialized formal program.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications: Requires certification in CPR/First Aid prior to completion of probation period. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
