About the role:

BSI America Professional Services Inc. (BSI) is hiring a Health, Safety and Environmental Consultant t to support the EHS department at a client site in the Frederick, MD area. This is a full-time position with benefits, located at a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with laboratory inspections; observe, document, and investigate unsafe work conditions. Work with laboratory personnel to develop JHAs and determine project-specific hazards and risks.

  • Identify and manage occupational hazards and environmental risks, lead incident investigations, conduct risk assessments, and create/document corrective and preventative actions to ensure a safe workplace. This includes initiating and leading regularly scheduled safety meetings with senior management to move beyond safety compliance to proactive identification of hazards and risks.

  • Provide oversight for chemical management, review new chemical approvals, develop chemical storage and segregation schemes, flammability limits, etc. In addition, conduct periodic review of hazardous chemical inventories for permit compliance

  • Occasionally conduct lab safety training for newly hired employees and scientists needing yearly recertification (new employee orientation, bloodborne pathogen, Safe Start, etc.).

  • Assistance / consulting on spill response and clean up, and local reporting to outside agencies (if necessary).

  • Implementing biosafety/hazard communication/chemical safety programs

  • Developing or maintaining management systems

  • Expertise and experience in EHS regulatory compliance.

  • Provide oversight for chemical management, review new chemical approvals, develop chemical storage and segregation schemes, flammability limits, etc.

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in scientific or EHS related field

  • Preferred 5 -7 years' experience with lab safety, biosafety and industrial hygiene

  • Prior experience with risk assessment and accident investigations

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong computer skills

  • Professional certifications (CIH) desired, but not required

  • Understanding of health and safety regulatory requirements, specifically Fed-OSHA standards, and conducting regulatory compliance audits

  • Strong background in laboratory safety and familiarity with biopharma lab environments

  • Strong background in biosafety with solid experience with BSL2 facilities and Institutional Biosafety Committees

  • Strong background in OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard

  • Ability to develop and manage a Chemical Hygiene Plan as a Chemical Hygiene Officer

  • Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA to assess existing programs and foster regulatory compliance

  • Experience with chemical inventory management preferably with 3E software

  • Industrial hygiene experience with ability to perform personnel and area monitoring in accordance with established sampling protocols

  • Conduct incident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective and preventative actions

  • Well-practiced in risk assessments, inspections, layered audits, and training development and deliverySelf-starter with a curious nature and ability to collaborate with staff at all levels

  • Radiation safety and laser safety experience a plus

The salary for this position can range from $102,400 to $140,250 annually; actual compensation is based on various factors, including but not limited to, the candidate's competencies, level of experience, education, location, divisional budget and internal peer compensation comparisons
