Job Description

Building Trades Technician I - Bar Harbor

Building Trades work is performed in a highly regulated critical environment that supports data centers, live animal colonies and sensitive research facilities on a 24/7 basis. Failures or incorrect operation can lead to loss of research data, interruption of scientific operations, or harm to animals. Technicians at all levels are responsible for the maintenance, modification, troubleshooting, and repair of building envelope and interior systems, and other related equipment as required by departmental needs. Building Trades Technician Level I: Majority of time is spent in training and planned basic activities such as minor repairs and preventive maintenance. Tasks are performed under close supervision by senior technicians and supervisors.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Perform basic troubleshooting, installation, and repair of carpentry, masonry, painting, siding, flooring, windows, doors, drywall, furniture, commercial roofing systems, minor low-voltage electrical work, and other related systems under the close guidance of senior technicians and supervisors.
  • Support project planning and coordination efforts with contractors and engineers.
  • Utilize computer applications, including a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), to document maintenance activities and generate reports, checklists, and other related documentation.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to on-campus emergencies within one hour on a 24/7 basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including shift work on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel occasionally for training and/or to support maintenance activities at other sites.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of building envelope and interior systems, including the identification and handling of hazardous building materials and the proper application of related products.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to effectively diagnose and resolve maintenance issues.
  • Ability to maintain complex building systems in critical environments.
  • Proficiency in utilizing a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to quickly learn and apply new technical skills related to facility maintenance and operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and maintain accurate documentation.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Climb stairs and ladders.
  • Bend, squat, crouch, crawl, kneel, stoop, and stretch.
  • Stand for prolonged periods.
  • Perform repairs at floor level, overhead, and within confined-space areas.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces and safely work in a variety of facility environments.
  • Ability to safely perform physical maintenance activities while working in diverse building and equipment environments.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally as needed for training and operational support.

Pay Range: $22.04 - $31.96
