Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc (AMA) is seeking a part-time intern to support the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at NASA Langley Research Center. The CAD Model Design Intern will support the Entry Systems Modeling project to develop free flight and forced oscillation model design for rapid prototype fabrication. Project activities include but are not limited to, forced oscillation and free flight tests to investigate the dynamic stability of blunt entry vehicles. The models to be tested include variations of geometries. Forced oscillation testing and free flight testing will provide static and dynamic stability data for the geometries tested as well as free flight dynamics which will serve as validation data for trajectory simulation analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Develop models in in the form of .igs or .stp, as well as the native CAD format used for the design work
  • Develop CAD models for oscillation configurations that include location of mounting interface at specified reference points,
  • Design geometry to accommodate thermal inset fasteners for accurate and reliable mounting to the balance sting
  • Create CAD solid models of free flight wind tunnel models using FDM 3D printing methods or similar.
  • Design the models to enable a movable center of gravity

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student with a degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in developing CAD models or 2 semesters of relevant CAD course work
  • Experience with .igs or .stp, as well as the native CAD format
  • Ability to work onsite at NASA Langley

This is an onsite position at NASA Langley Research Center and requires U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residence.
