POSITION SUMMARY:
These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Policies and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. Under the guidance of the Operations Director, the Health Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all campers and staff at YMCA Camp Loma Mar. This role manages daily medical care, medication administration, health documentation, and compliance with YMCA policies, California organized camp regulations, and American Camp Association (ACA) standards. The Health Supervisor maintains a safe and supportive health environment and provides compassionate, professional care to campers and staff throughout the camp season. This position is a key member of summer leadership team and works collaboratively with all summer staff to ensure high standards of safety, communication, and campers support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Medical Care & Medication Management
- Administer routine and as-needed medications to campers and staff according to physician instructions and parent authorization.
- Provide first aid and basic medical care in response to injuries, illnesses, and emergencies.
- Maintain a clean, well-organized health hut/clinic that supports efficient and confidential care.
- Monitor chronic health conditions and ensure appropriate accommodations and care plans are followed.
Health Records & Documentation
- Maintain accurate, confidential health records including medication logs, incident reports, treatment notes, and daily health hut activity documentation.
- Review camper health forms prior to arrival; flag concerns or follow-up needs and communicate with families when appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with state and ACA documentation standards, including proper storage and handling of medications.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Uphold and enforce camp health practices related to hygiene, sanitation, communicable disease prevention, hydration, and environmental hazards.
- Support emergency action plans and assist in medical emergencies as a first responder.
- Ensure daily health protocols are communicated clearly to summer staff and leadership.
- Monitor camp environment for risk factors such as heat illness, allergen exposure, fatigue, behavioral concerns, and injury trends.
Camper & Staff Support
- Provide warm, empathetic, and developmentally appropriate care to youth experiencing homesickness, anxiety, minor injuries, or general discomfort.
- Communicate health-related concerns to parents/guardians as needed in a clear and supportive manner.
- Support counselors, village leaders, and coordinators with guidance regarding camper health needs, documentation, and protocols.
- Participate in arrival and departure day processes, including reviewing medication check-in and parent communication.
Communication & Collaboration
- Work closely with the Operations Director and summer leadership team to ensure health-related issues are understood and addressed quickly.
- Participate in leadership briefings, staff meetings, and training sessions.
- Provide training to staff on basic health practices, injury prevention, hydration, wellness, and reporting procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Work takes place in both indoor and outdoor camp environments.
- Requires walking or moving across uneven terrain to respond to incidents around camp.
- Ability to bend, lift, kneel, and perform first aid tasks as required.
- Must be able to work long or irregular hours and respond quickly in emergencies.
- Must be able to communicate clearly in busy, high-energy settings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 21 years of age.
- Completion of required health and safety training prior to the start of camp, including: Pediatric First Aid, Pediatric CPR, Preventative health practices (infection control, immunizations, injury prevention)
- Certification in Wilderness First Aid, EMT or RN preferred.
- Experience providing basic medical care, EMT/WEMT/nursing background, or prior camp health experience strongly preferred.
- Strong ability to work effectively with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences.
- Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to maintain calm and clear thinking in high-pressure or emergency situations.
- Employment is contingent upon background clearance and meeting all YMCA hiring requirements.
