Job Description
CBRNE Safeguards & Enforcement Operations Specialist
Location: San Francisco, CA; Washington, DC; or New York, NY preferred | Remote considered for exceptional candidatesContract: 6-month W2 contractPay: $130–$145/hour, based on experience
Russell Tobin is supporting a leading AI technology company in hiring a CBRNE Safeguards & Enforcement Operations Specialist to support a highly sensitive and rapidly evolving safety and security program.
This is an urgent contract need focused on strengthening Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) controls across trusted-access and third-party enterprise environments. The ideal candidate will bring deep subject-matter expertise in CBRNE risk, safeguards, compliance, enforcement, or threat mitigation and will be comfortable translating complex safety requirements into practical operational controls.
What You’ll Do
- Support the development, implementation, and operation of safeguards designed to mitigate CBRNE-related risks.
- Help establish and enforce controls governing trusted access to sensitive capabilities, systems, or information.
- Evaluate third-party and enterprise use cases for potential CBRNE safety, security, misuse, or compliance concerns.
- Develop operational procedures for identifying, escalating, investigating, and responding to potential policy or safeguards violations.
- Translate CBRNE subject-matter expertise into clear, actionable controls that can be consistently applied by operational teams.
- Partner cross-functionally with safety, security, policy, legal, technical, and operational stakeholders.
- Assess emerging CBRNE threat scenarios and identify gaps in existing safeguards or enforcement processes.
- Support risk reviews, investigations, exception handling, and other high-sensitivity operational decisions.
- Develop documentation, playbooks, escalation criteria, and decision frameworks for CBRNE-related cases.
- Provide expert judgment in situations where established policies may not fully address novel or rapidly evolving risks.
What We’re Looking For
- Significant professional experience in CBRNE, CBRN, counterproliferation, weapons-of-mass-destruction risk, biosecurity, chemical security, nuclear security, explosives risk, or a closely related field.
- Strong understanding of safeguards, threat assessment, risk mitigation, compliance, enforcement, or access-control frameworks.
- Experience applying specialized subject-matter expertise within an operational environment rather than solely conducting academic or theoretical research.
- Ability to evaluate ambiguous or novel risk scenarios and make sound, defensible judgments.
- Experience developing or implementing policies, controls, standard operating procedures, investigative processes, or enforcement frameworks.
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to translate highly technical or specialized concepts for cross-functional audiences.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment involving sensitive and potentially high-consequence issues.
- High degree of discretion, judgment, and attention to detail.
Preferred Background
Candidates may come from a range of relevant environments, including:
- U.S. government or national security organizations
- CBRNE/WMD programs
- Counterproliferation or nonproliferation
- Defense or intelligence
- Homeland security or emergency preparedness
- Biosecurity or biosafety
- Chemical, radiological, or nuclear security
- Threat assessment or safeguards enforcement
- Trust & safety, investigations, or security operations involving high-consequence risk
Experience working at the intersection of emerging technology, AI safety, cybersecurity, or technology risk is a strong plus but is not required.
Work Arrangement
- Candidates located in San Francisco, Washington, DC, or New York City who can work from an office are strongly preferred. Remote candidates may be considered for an exceptional fit.
