Job Description

Leveraging a new automated production platform, JAX's iPSC repository is projected to become the largest in the world by 2030 by expanding to several thousand lines and enabling next-generation applications in disease modeling and drug discovery. The new Cellular Models production facility will be housed at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, CT.

The Cellular Biologist works closely with departmental leadership and a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technical specialists. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, project planning, method development, execution of laboratory procedures, adaptation of protocols, data collection and analysis, documentation, and contribution to reports and other written materials. The role requires strong mental focus, attention to detail, and proficient technical skills.

This position may provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff, departmental assistants, and trainees, supporting their development within and beyond the assigned work area. Depending on project and operational needs, the role may require a flexible schedule, including occasional evening, weekend, or holiday shifts.

In addition, the position involves regular collaboration with cross functional partners such as project managers, engineering teams, and software or technical support personnel to ensure smooth day to day laboratory operations in a production focused environment.

For this role we are seeking candidates who can train for approximately one month at our New York City location and then work full time at our Farmington, CT office.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Primary responsibilities may include implementing and performing cell biology related tasks/procedures as well as dissociative, spatial, and in vitro single cell assays.

  • Plan and monitor resources needed to conduct tasks such as the cell culture (manual or automated), spatial transcriptomics, and hyperplexed imaging technologies of the laboratory; maintain inventory control; coordinate space, field, equipment, and/or facilities; may monitor expenditures.

  • Documentation of results; implement protocols from the literature; identify problems, troubleshoot, and analyze variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols; modify, refine, or adapt techniques and procedures; modify and/or adjust quality control measures .

  • Lead exchange of information through demonstration and instruction. Other duties as assigned.

  • Primary responsibilities are to perform and independently monitor automated and manual cell culture and related activities, and to pick, pack, and confirm the shipment of cells to domestic and international customers. Adapts protocols and develops new workflows with periodic support as required.

  • Work collaboratively to perform all necessary protocols for workflows that include, but are not limited to, fibroblast expansion, reprogramming, iPSC expansion, and differentiations on the robotic platform(s), or manually as required.

  • Store and withdrawal of specimens from liquid nitrogen and freezers, and prepare media and reagents required for daily work. Work closely with the laboratory operations team to ensure reagent/consumable inventory is accurately and efficiently stocked.

  • Plan and monitor resources needed to operate the Global Stem Cell Array; maintain inventory control; coordinate space and field questions. You may be required to participate in the monitoring and tracking of resources/expenditures across projects.

  • Collaborate with engineers and other staff when resolving more complex issues. Documentation and feedback are provided in a variety of ways including the creation Create and modify modification of SOPs, filing of file tickets to software and automation teams, and providing provide feedback at inter- and intra-team meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • BS degree in biological science or related field

  • 3+ years of prior experience

  • Experience in multiple techniques such as flow cytometry, FACS sorting, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, and complex 3D cellular cultures

  • May be required to demonstrate ability to develop and implement research protocols, shown through contributions to research publications (authorship)

  • Demonstrated success in coordinating and/or conducting multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project

  • Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional, and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program

  • Experience with human/mammalian cell culture, with additional broad expertise in cell and molecular biology techniques, preferred. While not required, experience with liquid handling automation is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and improve biological workflows/processes, or have contributed to the development of automation/software tools.

  • Demonstrated ability in coordinating and performing multiple, concurrent assignments across complex workflows.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and interact with all individuals in a productive, professional, and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.

Pay Range for this role is $49,163 - $82,311 based on total years of related experience
