Location: Firehouse Active Adult Center

THE ORGANIZATION

A private nonprofit organization founded in 1973, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) is a large agency that is part of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) nationwide network. Founded as a result of the federal Older Americans Act, the AAAs are mandated to "facilitate the area-wide development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated system for providing long-term care in home and community-based settings, in a manner responsive to the needs and preferences of older individuals and their family caregivers." PCA carries out this mission through advocacy, stewardship of public funding, planning, development and administration of programs, and service coordination.

Description of Role: Under the supervision of the Center Director, the Custodian provides cleaning and sanitation services for the Senior Center facility and ensures proper maintenance of all areas of the facility in accordance with Health Department and Senior Center Standards. Performs minor maintenance and repairs, as needed.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience:

Education:

  • High school or vocational school graduate or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Experience with cleaning highly trafficked areas
  • Four years' related maintenance experience
  • Experience completing minor repairs
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems
  • Experience receiving and accounting for deliveries
  • Experience coordinating and moving material and furnishings

Job Responsibilities:

a. Clean restrooms, including all sinks, stall walls, toilets, urinals and floors. On a daily basis, check for cleanliness at regular intervals throughout the day.

b. Sweep, mop, vacuum floors; dust and wash baseboards, dust offices, furniture and fixtures throughout the facility

c. Clean-up spills or problem areas immediately.

d. Work with the Center Director on a deep cleaning schedule which provides the highest standard of cleanliness.

e. Pick up and remove trash from all areas.

f. Clean trash cans and waste baskets as needed; ensure all trash cans have lids and liners.

g. Clean kitchen including sink, shelves, floors and wipe down kitchen appliances on a daily basis, or more frequently as needed. Sweep and mop the kitchen floor daily.

h. Move supplies, equipment and small furniture, as needed, in support of center programming.

i. Detect and report any malfunctions or defects related to the electrical, mechanical or plumbing operations of the center. All defects or damages are to be reported as required.

j. Maintain all records related to the repair and maintenance of center equipment including HVAC inspections, sprinkler inspections, etc. Interact with PCA facilities manager and vendors as needed.

k. Maintain the exterior of the facility including clean sidewalks, light snow removal, tidy garden/flower beds and assist with garden maintenance (by members) as needed.

l. Perform light and routine maintenance including: changing lightbulbs; periodic inspection of outside and roof top drains, downspouts and gutters; minor facility repairs.

m. Ensure proper signage is affixed where needed (i.e. "No Smoking" "Wash Hands", "Exit Signage" etc.).

n. Other duties as may be assigned.

Professional Characteristics:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently is critical.
  • Ability to lift over 30 lbs.
  • Ability to assemble items as needed (desks, shelves, etc.)

  • Develops job skills as needed to adapt to change
  • Provides excellent customer service to all center customers
