Position Summary/Scope of Responsibility

The Billing Intern is responsible for supporting the revenue cycle management department as a whole.This role works closely with the billing, and payer teams.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Performs and documents follow-through efforts in a timely manner.
  2. Prepare, process and maintain letters, spreadsheets and trackers as assigned.
  3. Collaborate with the revenue cycle team to optimize workflows.
  4. Assist with reviewing and organizing credentialing applications for accuracy before processing.

  5. Support data entry of billing information into the accounting or billing system.

  6. Maintain and update electronic and paper billing files to ensure proper record keeping.

  7. Prepare trackers to ensure timeliness of processing and related approval of all documents assigned (e.g., statements, reminders, or copies of invoices).

  8. Perform basic research on discrepancies  identified and escalate findings to assigned manager.

  9. Assist with scanning, copying, and indexing documents into the RCM systems (ModMed, Modio, etc).

  10. Generate simple reports (e.g., payment status, outstanding balances) under staff supervision.

  11. Provide administrative support such as filing, scheduling, and updating billing logs.

  12. Shadowing other RCM staff to gain exposure to end-to-end billing processes.

  13. Contribute to special projects or process improvement initiatives as assigned.

  14. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Healthcare Administration preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products, as well as proficiency with standard office software and applications.
  • Outstanding time management skills and the ability to work effectively across multiple forms of communication and teams

  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment with a proven track record of results.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with excellent self-discipline and patience.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Exudes professionalism in presentation.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in the English language.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time and lift up to 25 pounds.  
  • Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when performing desk duties.  
  • Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting.
  • Adequate hearing to perform duties in person and over telephone.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading materials from printed sources and computer screens.
