Job Description

CLFC Healthcare and Communications is expanding its established interpreter network into the Willamette Valley. We are looking for a qualified interpreter to support scheduled medical appointments at an Indian Health Service health center in Salem, Oregon.

This is in-person work. You are in the room with the patient and the provider, interpreting the conversation that determines someone's care. The encounters are outpatient clinical visits, so the interpreting is medical: diagnoses, treatment options, medication instructions, follow-up plans, and the questions patients ask when they are worried. Accuracy and impartiality matter more here than speed. This is not a remote or VRI position.

The role suits an interpreter who already works in healthcare settings and wants steady, predictable, well-paid assignments added to an existing schedule. Volume is modest, approximately two to three appointments per week, and appointments are confirmed with at least 72 hours notice, so this fits alongside other work rather than replacing it.

Compensation and Engagement

  • $100 to $120 per hour, set by certification level and medical interpreting experience.
  • Two-hour minimum paid on every confirmed on-site assignment. If the appointment runs shorter, you are still paid for two hours.
  • Short-notice premium. Requests made inside the standard 72-hour window are paid at a premium rate above your standard hourly rate.
  • Late-cancellation protection. Confirmed assignments cancelled inside 48 hours of the scheduled start time are paid.
  • Mileage to and from the assignment site reimbursed at the current GSA rate, in addition to your hourly compensation.
  • Independent contractor (1099) engagement, paid per assignment. You control your own availability and accept the assignments that work for your schedule.
  • You submit an invoice for completed assignments through the CLFC BRIDGE App, which timestamps each assignment so your invoice and our records match. Payment is issued by direct deposit on CLFC standard contractor terms.
  • Assignment dispatch, acceptance and confirmation handled through the CLFC BRIDGE App, so scheduling is clear and documented rather than a chain of phone calls.
  • Onboarding and role-specific preparation provided before your first assignment.
  • Multi-year engagement potential. The federal requirement includes a base period and four option periods, supporting a long-term roster relationship rather than a one-off placement.

Required Qualifications

  • National certification as an ASL interpreter, such as RID NIC, CI and CT, NAD III through V, or BEI Advanced or Master.
  • Current Oregon Medical Sign Language Interpreter license issued by the Oregon Health Licensing Office, or eligibility to obtain it before your first assignment, as required for this engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting in medical or healthcare settings.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English, with the ability to interpret medical terminology and clinical discussion accurately and impartially.
  • Ability to travel to and work on-site in Salem, Oregon.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and patient privacy obligations.
  • Adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct.

Strongly Preferred

  • Prior experience interpreting in a federal, tribal, or community health setting.
  • Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) credential, or experience working in a CDI and hearing interpreter team.
  • Experience supporting culturally diverse patient populations, including tribal or American Indian and Alaska Native healthcare environments.
  • Availability for occasional short-notice coverage in addition to scheduled assignments.
