QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or equivalent required
- Current certification as a Surgical Technologist
- Minimum of two years' work experience as a CST at an acute care or rural hospital.
- BLS current at time of hire
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, sterile supplies and equipment.
- Ensure all surgical equipment/instrumentation is sterilized and functioning properly prior to presentation to sterile field and use.
- Assist surgeons during operations by passing instruments and supplies, providing retraction, improving visual field, and other duties as delegated with the scope of the CST.
- Maintain a sterile environment through adherence to sterile/aseptic technique to minimize the risk of infection in accordance with recognized national standards and hospital specific policies and procedures. .
- Monitor and account for all surgical tools and supplies throughout the procedure. Consistently participate in surgical counts at appropriate times. Accounts for sponges, needles, instruments and other potential foreign bodies.
- Help position patients for surgery as needed.
- Performs surgical hand scrub/cleaning and dons sterile gloves according to gowning and gloving policy. Maintains proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient.
- Assist with application of sterile drapes.
- Prepare and manage specimens on the sterile field.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond promptly.
- Assist in the application of dressings and safe transfer of patients to stretcher.
- Perform inventory checks and restock operating room supplies as needed.
- Properly dispose of biohazardous or pathological waste per facility protocol.
- Participates in room turnover and housekeeping duties as needed. Returns unused supplies, instruments and equipment at end of the day. Participates in departmental restocking duties.
- Compiles with hospital policy and procedures.
- Consistently participates in time out procedure with full engagement; confirms site marking prior to incision.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Participates in facility cost saving initiatives.
- Participates in case pulling duties to prepare for upcoming cases by close attention to surgeon preference cards.
- Transports instruments to decontamination area utilizing appropriate technique and incompliance with established policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of instrument decontamination, assembly, packaging and sterilization.
- Adheres to attendance, punctuality, meal and break time period policies.
- Attends departmental meetings or document review of materials presented.
- Adheres to patient confidentiality expectations.
- Reports unsafe situations to supervisor and reports as needed through electronic variance system.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and participation in hospital performance improvement, infection control and risk management programs.
- Demonstrates knowledge of cultural, spiritual, and age-related considerations when interacting/caring for patients and coworkers.

- The employee must be able to lift and/or carry over 25 pounds on a regular basis and be able to push/pull over 25 pounds on a regular basis.
- The employee must be able to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.
