Job Description
Child Safety Investigations- Social Services Specialist- DeSoto CountyJoin a vital mission to protect and advocate for children in DeSoto County. As a Child Safety Investigations- Social Services Specialist, you will play a crucial role in assessing and investigating reports of child maltreatment, ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable children across Mississippi. This full-time, in-person position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community while working within a supportive and professional environment.What Youll Do:
- Conduct initial and ongoing safety and risk assessments for cases involving abuse, neglect, exploitation, human trafficking, and fatalities.
- Investigate allegations received through Mississippi Centralized Intake and Assessment, including home visits, interviews, and collaboration with collateral sources.
- Develop and monitor safety plans, providing fact-based service recommendations.
- Perform historical record checks to evaluate prior agency involvement.
- Schedule and attend forensic interviews, autopsies, and case-related meetings.
- Prepare detailed investigative reports and case notes, and testify in court and administrative proceedings as needed.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with law enforcement, legal partners, and community agencies.
- Mentor and support new staff, participate in team meetings, and engage in ongoing professional development.
- Utilize data management tools to prioritize responsibilities and meet deadlines.
- Participate in on-call rotations during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Travel routinely within assigned service areas, with mileage reimbursed per state guidelines.
- Prior employment with the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services (MDCPS) within the past five years.
- Successful completion of MDCPS Pre-Service Training.
- Bachelors degree in Social Work, Social Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Nursing, Counseling, Educational Psychology, Family Studies, or a related field.
- Valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance.
- Ability to pass background checks and drug screening.
- Strong recognition of child maltreatment signs and symptoms.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- High cultural competency and rapport-building abilities.
- Critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and resilience in unpredictable environments.
- Willingness to travel across Mississippi and participate in on-call duties.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of forensic interview techniques.
- Familiarity with legal and court processes related to child welfare.
- Bachelors degree in a related field.
- Prior experience with child protective services or investigations.
- Ability to work in various environments and travel within Mississippi.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and team activities.
