Job Description

Job description

The Claims & Safety Specialist prioritizes the investigation and resolution of claims while supporting safety and compliance work that keeps drivers qualified and the business running smoothly. This role blends investigative thinking, customer-facing communication, and an understanding of how safety decisions, follow-up, and documentation affect cost and risk.

You will manage claims from first notice through closure by verifying facts, asking thoughtful questions, and following issues through to completion. You’ll work closely with drivers, insurance carriers, vendors, and internal teams to build relationships, resolve issues, and support safety and compliance efforts that impact the bottom line.

Claims & Investigation Responsibilities

  • Reduce open claims through consistent follow-up and timely closure

  • Verify details, ask clarifying questions, and investigate discrepancies

  • Collect, review, and organize accident and incident information, including work orders and unreported events

  • Maintain structured claim files and documentation directories

  • Submit initial notice of claim to insurance carriers and other involved parties

  • Open, track, and actively manage claims through resolution

  • Review driver involvement and supporting documentation

  • Obtain repair estimates, coordinate repairs, and track completion

  • Invoice responsible parties, track costs and billing, and follow through on collections

Safety & Compliance Support

  • Support the Safety team as needed to keep drivers qualified, equipment compliant, and issues from escalating. This includes ownership of documentation, systems, follow-up, and coordination across safety-related processes.

  • Work within and manage multiple safety-related systems, including claims platforms, ELDs, event recorders, and related software

  • Maintain accurate driver and equipment qualification documentation, including DQ files, employment verifications, DOT compliance records, drug testing, hours-of-service documentation, inspections, logs, licenses, and permitting

  • Coordinate safety-related equipment needs, including ELD swaps, event recorder orders, and inventory tracking

What Success Looks Like

  • Full ownership of all open claims without reminders

  • Fewer open claims over time due to steady resolution and follow-up

  • Builds trust through results, leading to increased dollar authority for claim settlements and resolution decisions

  • Drivers remain qualified and active because safety items are handled proactively

  • The Safety Director spends significantly less time handling claims and follow-ups

  • Clear systems exist for tracking, documentation, and follow-up

  • Strong understanding of how safety, compliance, claims, and costs connect across operations

This role is a strong fit for someone who:

  • Has strong investigative instincts and does not accept surface-level answers

  • Asks thoughtful questions to fully understand situations

  • Follows issues through until fully resolved

  • Is comfortable in customer-facing conversations with drivers, carriers, and vendors

  • Communicates clearly and builds buy-in while still holding firm boundaries

  • Understands the importance of costs, billing, invoicing, and financial follow-up

  • Manages multiple open items without losing track of details or priorities

This Role Is Not a Fit For Someone Who:

  • Lets issues slide instead of following up

  • Avoids asking questions to fully understand a situation

  • Needs frequent reminders to manage tasks

  • Prefers highly predictable work with minimal judgment calls

Job requirements

Experience & Skills

  • Experience in trucking, safety, or legal or police investigations and claims is a strong plus but not required

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills

  • Comfort working across multiple systems and tools

  • An IT or systems background is a bonus, especially for supporting safety technology
