Job Description

Environment, Health & Safety

The Metropolitan District is a non-profit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929 to provide potable water and sewerage services on a regional basis. Today, the MDC provides quality water supply, water pollution control, mapping, and household hazardous waste collection to eight member municipalities - Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor - and to portions of other towns in the region. The EH&S Department is looking to hire a full-time (40 hours/week) college intern for the MDC's summer internship program.

The Intern will report to the company's EH&S Department in Hartford.

The program will begin on June 1, 2026, and end on July 31, 2026

DUTIES

The selected intern will be tasked with assisting the EH&S team with key safety projects and initiatives, in addition to hands-on tasks to include, but not limited to, the functions listed below: Work with Management and represented personnel to improve hazard recognition and human performance as they relate to safety.

Assist in safety compliance audits and report findings and assist in development of corrective action plans; conduct field surveys and develop JSA's to determine site-specific safety requirements such as equipment specifications, proper personal protective equipment, machine specific lockout/tagout procedures and safety training; attend safety committee meetings; perform project management administrative activities; create chemical inventory lists and gather the necessary SDS documents; assist with the Household Hazardous Waste program; management of Hazardous Waste, perform routine data/trend analysis related to wastewater discharge monitoring reports; assist with updating facility SPCC and SWPPP plans and stormwater evaluations; and, perform project management administrative activities.

Complete assigned EHS tasks/projects and other duties as assigned including special internship project and presentation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Major in Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene or related major required. Graduating seniors with a degree in Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene studies may also apply. Candidates must work well in teams, have excellent communication skills, possess a creative and innovative mindset, be able to work independently on a given assignment/project and demonstrate assertiveness. Candidates should also be highly self-directed, well organized and able to learn quickly.

The selected intern must possess a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office. Some prior experience in a Co-op or internship is a plus. Candidates must possess a valid US driver's license.
