Job Description

The College Lab Assistant 2 – Language Arts Option promotes student success in all English courses and courses with writing elements including but not limited to ESOL Reading, and Liberal Arts course work. This position provides lead work for a rotation of writing and other subject related tutors consisting of student employees and volunteers. This position works as part of a team to manage the daily operations of the Academic Success Center.

Some of the responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Promote student success in all English courses, courses with writing elements in other disciplines and other related courses.
  • Manage the daily operations of the Writing Area.
  • Work as a team to manage the daily operations of the Academic Success Center
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

Salary Range:

$22.27 - $31.12 per hour/ $46,499.76 - $64,979 annually

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate or higher degree in Language Arts or a closely related field such as American Sign Language (ASL), English as a Second Language (ESOL), or Speech and Communication Studies

AND

  • One (1) academic year of teaching/tutoring experience in Language Arts at the high school level or above

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Demonstrates an ongoing understanding of cultural fluency. Incorporates culturally responsive practices, and actively engages in antiracism professional development learning opportunities

Preferred Qualification 

  • Bachelor degree in English or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrate an effort to improve cultural competence and actively takes steps to include diversity training or professional development.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of course content and tutor techniques to support student success.
  • Human relations skills sufficient to assist and motivate students from a variety of ethnic, cultural, academic, economic and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty members, counselors, administrators and related personnel regarding student needs, department needs and other concerns.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of college policies and procedure to assist students
  • Ability to acquire knowledge and curriculum changes, developments in the writing field, and tutoring methodologies to maintain up-to-date service delivery.

Other Requirements

  • Be able to sit for long periods of time; be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Current and / or former employees must be in good standing at Minneapolis College for consideration.

Work Shift (Hours / Days of work)

9:30 am- 6:00 pm Mon-Thur; 8:00 am- 4:30 pm Friday.

Telework (Yes/No)

May be eligible for partial telework per Minneapolis College's telework guidelines.
