Job Description

Job Title: Commercial Property Claims Examiner (Mid-Senior Level)

Location: On-site in Glen Allen, VA

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Commercial Property Claims Examiner to join our growing Excess & Surplus (E&S) Claims team. This position is responsible for the prompt, thorough, and professional handling of moderate to complex first-party commercial property claims, including large loss, catastrophe, and business income matters.

The ideal candidate is a proactive claims professional who is comfortable handling complex claims with limited supervision, thrives in a fast-paced environment, exercises sound judgment, and possesses strong coverage analysis, investigative, and negotiation skills.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Independently investigate, evaluate, and resolve commercial property claims in accordance with company guidelines and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze policy coverage, endorsements, exclusions, and conditions to determine coverage applicability and exposure.
  • Write detailed coverage letters.
  • Manage claims involving commercial buildings, business personal property, business income, extra expense, and catastrophe losses.
  • Retain and direct independent adjusters, engineers, accountants, consultants, restoration vendors, and legal counsel as necessary.
  • Establish and maintain accurate indemnity and expense reserves based upon current claim information and anticipated exposure.
  • Conduct timely and meaningful claim reviews and document all claim activity in a complete, objective, and contemporaneous manner.
  • Evaluate damages, negotiate settlements, and facilitate claim resolution within assigned authority.
  • Identify claims presenting potential litigation, fraud, subrogation and salvage.
  • Collaborate with underwriting partners to identify emerging loss trends and provide claim-related feedback regarding portfolio performance.
  • Provide clear and professional communication to insureds, brokers, adjusters, attorneys, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of commercial property claims handling experience.
  • Prior experience handling commercial property claims within an E&S, specialty, surplus lines, or complex commercial insurance environment strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing claims involving business income, large loss property damage, catastrophe losses, and coverage analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial property policy forms and endorsements.
  • Ability to analyze complex factual, legal, and coverage issues and develop practical claim strategies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
