Job Summary

The Communications Manager is a key member of Mass General Brigham’s Marketing & Communications team, reporting to the Director, Clinical Department and Institute Communications. This role serves as an embedded communications resource for the Neurosciences Institute, Department of Neurology, and Department of Neurosurgery. This role is responsible for executing integrated communication plans that support the Neurosciences Institute, Department of Neurology, and Department of Neurosurgery. The Communications Manager will work closely with the Clinical Department and Institute leadership team to ensure effective communication that aligns with enterprise priorities and enhances faculty and staff engagement.  A significant aspect of this role involves not only supporting the execution of communications plans but also the art of professional writing. The Communications Manager will be responsible for drafting clear, persuasive, and engaging announcements, editorial pieces, internal newsletters, and leadership messages. This requires a deep understanding of organizational objectives and the ability to translate complex information into accessible language tailored for diverse audiences, including clinicians, researchers, faculty, and staff. Core elements of the position include maintaining editorial consistency, upholding tone and voice standards, and ensuring that all written communications reflect the institution's values and strategic priorities. The role also demands strong collaboration with subject matter experts, creative teams, and leadership to shape narratives that inspire action and foster a sense of shared purpose across the organization. Success in this role will rely on close, coordinated collaboration across the broader Mass General Brigham Marketing & Communications ecosystem—including digital, content, brand, creative, media relations, editorial planning, and change management teams.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or related field.

  • 8+ years of experience in communication, with a proven track record of developing and executing successful communication strategies required

  • 2+ years in a leadership role

  • Demonstrated experience within a healthcare environment, preferably an academic medical center or large health system.

  • Provenexpertisein internal engagement, change management, and storytelling.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize and deliver under tight deadlines in a matrixed organization.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Communication Planning and Execution: Implement comprehensive communication plans that supportthe Neurosciences Institute, Department of Neurology, and Department of Neurosurgery.Ensure alignment with enterprise goals and institutional change efforts.

  • Content Creation and Management: Develop and manage content for various communication channels, including email, newsletters, town halls, and intranet content. Ensure content quality, message consistency, and alignment with institutional priorities.

  • Internal Communications Excellence: Champion internal communications as a strategic enabler of engagement, operational clarity, and cultural alignment. Establish best practices, including message calendars, multi-channel distribution, tone and voice standards, and leadership visibility protocols.

  • Department and Institute Storytelling:Identifyand elevate stories thatshowcaseclinical excellence, groundbreaking research, educational innovation, and faculty achievements. Collaborate with creative and content teams to produce engaging narratives.

  • Executive and System Leadership Engagement:Translatesystem priorities into effective departmental communications. Communicate institutional messages with clarity and credibility.

  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate closely with central Marketing & Communications teams to ensure cohesive messaging, reduce duplication, and maximize impact. Participate in cross-enterprise campaigns and initiatives.

  • Measurement and Continuous Improvement: Use data and stakeholder feedback to refine strategy and drive iterative improvements.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Attention to Detail:Maintainhigh standardsfor accuracy, brand consistency, and messaging quality.
