Job Description

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.

ALSO is looking for a Compliance Engineer to serve as a critical subject matter expert and the primary gatekeeper for product safety, ensuring that the company's innovative products meet and exceed all relevant regulatory and safety standards for North America and international EU and other global markets. This role is deeply integrated into the entire product development lifecycle, requiring a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating potential safety risks. You will drive a culture of safety by collaborating cross-functionally, performing detailed risk assessments, establishing rigorous testing protocols, managing complex certification processes, and engaging directly with regulatory bodies.

What You Will Do

  • Guide product development teams to ensure products meet all applicable internal safety specifications and processes.

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, including resource allocation, budget tracking for third-party testing, and detailed work breakdown structures for global certifications.

  • Manage day-to-day operational aspects of compliance projects, tracking progress against certification milestones.

  • Conduct risk assessments related to compliance timelines and potential safety roadblocks, developing mitigation strategies. Identify, track, and resolve compliance issues and roadblocks promptly.

  • Contribute to product design reviews and actively identify safety hazards and compliance issues. Work with the cross-functional team to ensure issues are resolved promptly and effectively.

  • Determine the applicable regulations, standards, and safety requirements for new and existing products, with deep knowledge of US (e.g., CPSC, UL) and EU safety regulations (e.g., Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive, EN/IEC/ISO standards).

  • Knowledge in safety standards such as UL 2271, UL 2849, EN 15194, ISO 17860 and other general safety standards that will be used for other future products.

  • Knowledge in compliance testing and certification activities.

  • Translate complex product safety regulatory requirements into clear, actionable design requirements for R&D engineers and provide continuous product safety technical guidance

  • Review, approve, or modify changes to products, processes, and documentation that could potentially impact product safety.

  • Engage with internal leadership to represent, articulate, and provide strategic guidance on compliance-related topics.

  • Serve as the key liaison with external testing laboratories and regulatory bodies to successfully achieve and maintain product certifications.

What You Will Bring

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or related technical field).

  • 5+ years of experience working in Product Safety and Regulatory Compliance roles for hardware or electro-mechanical products.

  • Demonstrated expertise in navigating complex US (e.g., UL) and EU (e.g., CE Marking, LVD, Machinery Directive) regulatory landscapes.

  • Practical experience managing the entire product certification process with third-party testing agencies.

  • Proven ability to conduct and document thorough product risk assessments.

Preferred Certifications

  • Specific experience with safety standards for energy storage or e-mobility (e.g., UL 2271, UL 2849, EN 15194).

  • Familiarity with global compliance requirements beyond North America and the European Union.

The salary for this position ranges from $170,000 to $210,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
