Job Description
Payrate: $80.00- $85.00/hr.Summary The position involves conducting laboratory inspections, reviewing research and development activities, evaluating equipment purchase requirements, performing laser exposure calculations and measurements, and helping establish and maintain safe working environments involving lasers, LEDs, X-ray systems, and other radiation sources. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional research and product teams while ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards and program requirements.Responsibilities
- Conduct laboratory audits and inspections to ensure compliance with laser and radiation safety requirements.
- Analyze safety hazards and assist in developing requirements for hardware containing hazardous elements such as lasers, LEDs, and X-ray systems.
- Interpret and implement applicable laser and optical safety standards, including ANSI Z136.1, FLPPS, IEC 60825, and IEC 62471.
- Create, review, and approve standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to laser and optical hazards.
- Review and approve work performed by external laser service technicians.
- Identify corrective actions, support implementation efforts, and communicate findings to stakeholders.
- Perform laser and LED measurements, including power, spectral, and temporal assessments.
- Conduct laser exposure calculations and hazard evaluations, including establishing appropriate control measures for laser work areas.
- Support radiation safety initiatives, including implementation of established business unit safety plans.
- Perform X-ray leakage surveys and audit training programs and operating procedures for X-ray generating devices.
- Implement and maintain safety protocols required for X-ray generators and related radiation-producing equipment.
- Perform testing to simulate faults and validate equipment safety and optical performance.
- Provide guidance to teams establishing procedures that align with laser and radiation safety program requirements.
- Communicate effectively with employees, technical teams, and stakeholders across multiple organizational levels.
- Support laboratories located in Sunnyvale, Burlingame, and Fremont, with additional travel as needed.
- Assist with additional Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), laboratory safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, and machine guarding.
- Thrive in a dynamic environment while supporting both research and production-related activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or related discipline.
- Direct experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
- Experience conducting safety investigations during product development, testing, or failure analysis activities.
- Experience working with multiple radiation sources, including lasers, LEDs, and X-ray generating equipment.
- Experience in a technical or engineering environment involving field testing, reliability, failure analysis, or related activities.
- Experience reviewing and implementing safety requirements within research, laboratories, or production environments.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and solve complex technical safety challenges.
- Strong written, verbal, presentation, and reporting skills.
- Proficiency with ANSI Z136.1 – The American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers.
- Demonstrated Laser Safety Officer (LSO) experience.
- Strong understanding of laser hazard assessment and exposure evaluation.
- Experience auditing laboratories for safety compliance.
- Knowledge of laser, optical, and radiation safety practices.
- Ability to develop, review, and maintain safety procedures and documentation.
- Experience communicating safety requirements and corrective actions to stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional environments.
- Experience serving as both a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
- Experience supporting hardware research, development, or production environments.
- Proficiency with FDA/CDRH FLPPS, IEC 60825-1, and IEC 62471-1 standards.
- Strong understanding of laser calculations, including MPE, NOHD, and NHZ evaluations across various laser types and configurations.
- Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO) certification from the Board of Laser Safety (BLS).
- Ability to influence teams through accurate analysis, technical guidance, and collaborative problem solving.
