Job Description

The Office of the Commissioner of Political Practices (COPP) is seeking a Compliance Specialist. This position helps ensure that candidate campaign finance disclosures comply with Montana's campaign finance laws. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong customer service skills and the ability to work effectively in a small, team-oriented office.

Job Duties:

  • Evaluate candidate campaign finance reports for compliance with state campaign finance laws and disclosure regulations.
  • Coordinate with candidates to correct and minimize reporting errors.
  • Answer inquiries from candidates and potential candidates regarding reporting requirements and regulations.
  • Provide educational outreach for members of the public, candidates, committees, lobbyists, public employees, and elected officials.
  • May make recommendations for improving reporting processes and outreach efforts.
  • May assist with campaign finance compliant investigations.

Additional Salary Information:

Salary and level of responsibility will be determined based on qualifications and experience, including knowledge of and experience with compliance and campaign finance related work.

Required Competencies:

  • Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn Montana campaign finance and disclosure regulations.
  • Knowledge of compliance auditing techniques.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and explain compliance deficiencies to stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate discretion, integrity, and fair-mindedness.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a bachelor's degree in public administration, business or a related field and two years of related experience. Other combinations of education and experience may be substituted.
