Job Description

Why This Role Is Important

As part of State Street’s Consulting function, this role leads the execution of large-scale, enterprise-wide programs supporting key strategic priorities. The team partners across the organization to deliver complex initiatives that may span strategic transformation, regulatory change, product, operations, technology-enabled change, and other enterprise priorities.

The Consulting function is strengthening State Street’s internal program management capability, providing the organization with experienced leaders who can successfully manage complex programs and deliver sustainable business outcomes.

As a Program Manager, Vice President, you will take end-to-end ownership of programs, establishing the structure, governance, stakeholder alignment, and execution discipline necessary to achieve results.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for an experienced Program Manager with a proven track record of leading large, complex programs. You will bring an owner’s mindset, looking across the entire program to establish effective governance, anticipate risks and dependencies, and drive execution through to successful outcomes.

Equally important is the ability to listen, read the room, and adapt your approach to different stakeholders and situations. You should be comfortable influencing senior leaders, constructively challenging assumptions, evaluating alternatives, and operating effectively in complex and ambiguous environments.

Your background may span financial services, technology, operations, regulatory, transformation, or consulting, but your core expertise must be program management and delivery.

What You Will Be Responsible For

Program Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead large, complex programs from initial definition and mobilization through execution, implementation, and delivery.
  • Take end-to-end ownership for program outcomes, ensuring objectives, scope, milestones, resources, dependencies, risks, and deliverables remain aligned.
  • Establish the program structure, operating rhythm, and delivery approach appropriate to each initiative.
  • Lead through both hands-on delivery and oversight of delivery through others, depending on the needs and structure of the program.
  • Maintain focus on measurable business outcomes, including financial benefit, improved risk profile, and improvements in client or employee experience, as applicable.
  • Apply lessons learned from previous programs to strengthen execution and anticipate challenges before they become issues.

Governance & Executive Engagement

  • Establish and maintain effective program governance, including steering committees, working groups, decision forums, executive reporting, and escalation processes.
  • Partner with executive sponsors and senior stakeholders across business and functional areas to create alignment, drive decisions, and maintain accountability.
  • Prepare and lead senior-level program discussions, translating complex information into clear issues, options, decisions, priorities, and actions.
  • Tailor communication and engagement approaches based on the audience, program environment, and circumstances.

Risk, Issues & Dependencies

  • Look across the entirety of the program to proactively identify emerging risks, issues, interdependencies, and potential barriers to execution.
  • Anticipate challenges and drive solutions before they materially affect program outcomes.
  • Connect information across workstreams, functions, and stakeholders to identify issues or dependencies that may not be immediately visible.
  • Apply sound judgment when evaluating alternatives, solving problems, and determining when escalation or a change in approach is required.

Stakeholder & Change Leadership

  • Build trusted relationships with executive sponsors, senior business leaders, workstream owners, functional partners, and external consultants.
  • Lead change across complex stakeholder environments and help maintain alignment throughout program execution.
  • Listen actively and recognize stakeholder concerns, competing priorities, and potential resistance that could affect delivery.
  • Influence without direct authority and facilitate constructive challenge and debate to drive decisions and accountability.
  • Adapt communication style and program approach while maintaining focus on the overall program objectives.
  • Manage external consulting partners, where applicable, and integrate their work effectively into the broader program.

Consulting Capability

  • Contribute to the continued development of State Street’s internal consulting and program management capabilities.
  • Bring flexibility across assignments, applying strong program management practices to a range of strategic, regulatory, product, operational, transformation, and technology-enabled initiatives.
  • Apply knowledge and lessons learned across programs rather than becoming dependent on a single area of subject-matter expertise.
  • Share effective practices that strengthen program execution across the broader team.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience personally leading and delivering large, complex programs, with accountability for overall execution and outcomes.
  • Proven ability to take end-to-end ownership, from structuring and mobilizing a program through implementation and delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multi-workstream, cross-functional programs involving senior stakeholders across multiple business or functional areas.
  • Experience leading programs characterized by senior stakeholder involvement, multiple functions, significant organizational investment, and meaningful business outcomes.
  • Strong experience establishing and managing program governance, including steering committees, executive engagement and reporting, decision forums, escalation processes, and program controls.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing change across complex organizations and stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively manage risks, issues, interdependencies, milestones, and competing priorities, including anticipating challenges before they affect delivery.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to communicate effectively with senior sponsors, business leaders, operations teams, technology partners, and external consultants.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen actively, read stakeholder dynamics, think on your feet, and adjust your approach based on the audience and situation.
  • Proven ability to influence without direct authority, constructively challenge others, facilitate difficult conversations, and drive stakeholders toward decisions and accountability.
  • Sound judgment, including the ability to connect information across workstreams, evaluate alternatives, and make risk-based decisions in ambiguous or changing environments.
  • Sufficient understanding of technology and operational dependencies to identify potential impacts, ask informed questions, and engage the appropriate subject-matter experts.
  • Experience managing and integrating the work of external consulting partners within broader programs.
  • Flexibility and openness to challenge, debate, alternative perspectives, and changing assignments.
  • Financial services experience preferred but not required.
  • Consulting or client-facing experience preferred.
  • Experience leading regulatory, strategic transformation, operating-model, product, or technology-enabled programs preferred.
  • Big Four or management consulting experience a plus.
  • Project or program management certification a plus but not required.
