DIVISION: Health Commissioner's Office of Communications (HCO-Comms)

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) protects and promotes the health of all Philadelphians and provides a safety net for people who are disproportionately impacted by societal factors that limit their access to healthcare and other resources necessary for optimal health. The agency leads programs to prevent communicable diseases; prevent chronic diseases and promote healthy behaviors; prevent environmental health risks and injuries; investigate disease outbreaks; respond to public health emergencies; and promote the health of women, children, and families. In addition, the department operates a series of primary care clinics. PDPH has been on the vanguard of public health, proposing policy solutions to issues like opioid and tobacco use, and intends to continue developing creative solutions to both long-standing urban health problems and new crises.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is seeking a creative and self-motivated content creator to join the Health Commissioner's Office of Communications (HCO-Comms). HCO-Comms drives the development and implementation of PDPH's internal and external communications strategy. HCO-Comms works hand in hand with the department's leaders, administration, and programmatic divisions to share trustworthy, timely, relevant, and culturally inclusive information that impacts the public's health. The office also coordinates closely with City leadership and other City departments, especially during outbreaks, large-scale events, and City emergencies. PDPH's content is shared across a variety of communications platforms, including news media, social media, websites, and print.

The Content Creator: Short-Form Video will work with the HCO-Comms Director, Deputy Director, and creative team, as well as PDPH programmatic and administrative divisions, other City departments, collaborators, and influencers to develop engaging short-form video content for social media platforms on a variety of public health topics. The ideal candidate will have experience filming, editing, and producing social media clips that capture attention, inform, and inspire action to fulfill the Department's mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Film and edit short-form video content (i.e., Reels) highlighting public health initiatives, programs, resources, and campaigns.
  • Translate public health messages into visually compelling, shareable, easy-to-understand video content.
  • Stay current on social media trends, platform algorithms, and content best practices on current and emerging platforms.
  • Work independently to conceptualize and execute video ideas.
  • Manage multiple video projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining a consistent brand voice.
  • Develop content for various audiences and channels, ensuring accessibility and clarity.
  • Learn about key health department operations, divisions, and program activities to identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Maintain an organized library of project files.

SKILLS:

  • Extensive experience producing engaging short-form video content
  • Experience working with or on health-focused content
  • Experience in video filming, editing, and post-production, including CapCut or similar tools
  • A firm understanding of social media storytelling, trends, and visual engagement strategies
  • Ability to produce content quickly and efficiently while maintaining high quality
  • Excellent communications, time management, and organization skills
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively as a team

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree or better required, preferably with a focus in marketing or journalism
  • One to three years of experience creating digital or social media content (professional or freelance) required
  • Preferred: Experience in content creation on public health topics
  • Preferred: Background in journalism

SALARY: $60,000 - $65,000 annually
