Job Description
SUMMARY: The Controls Engineering Intern will be responsible for acquiring skills related to automation systems (BAS) design, installation, programming, and process improvement. This position reports directly and has duties assigned by the Controls Engineering Team Leader. Additional responsibilities pertaining to controls engineering and controls projects may be assigned at the discretion of the Controls Engineering Team Leader.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Gain knowledge of Building Automation and HVAC systems.
- Understand and implement principles of basic Controls Engineering design processes, including system flow diagram drafting, end device selection, control device wiring design, and authoring sequence of operations
- Complete Controls Project As-builts utilizing Visio-based tools
- Learn basics of BACnet Modbus, and Network communication protocols.
- Shadow Controls Engineers, Controls Technicians, either in office or at project job sites.
- Exposure to basic controller, and system supervisor programming
- Assist with or complete controller panel building as directed by the Controls Engineering Team Leader
- Develop methods of designing control panel schematics
- Support development of standard work details, templates, and reference material
- Provide exceptional customer service for internal and external customers
TEAMWORK:
- Demonstrate and promote cooperation and teamwork throughout the Company
- Improve knowledge of controls engineering through self learning and taking part in skills improvement training, while sharing gained knowledge with team members.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
- Provide responsive professional, and diplomatic customer service to internal and external customers.
SAFETY:
- Follow all company safety programs and report any non-compliance to the Controls Engineering Team Leader.
- Proper Personal Protective Equipment must be utilized at all times when required.
- Report all Human Resource related incidents to the Controls Engineering Team Leader immediately.
- Complete all required safety training courses as assigned and within the required due date.

The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Actively obtaining either an Engineering degree (BSME, BSAE, or BSEE preferred) or HVAC Technical degree.
Understanding of basic programming, and low voltage circuit design and theory.
COMPUTER SKILLS: Experience with Microsoft Visio Design software preferred, or equivalent experience utilizing CAD design software. Basic programming experience preferred. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Word, and Excel.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND AFFILIATIONS: This position entails continual learning of current, legacy, and future building automation system controls components.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and compose technical information. Ability to convey complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner that can be understood by individuals without knowledge or experience in building automation systems.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert in all units of measure.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract, and concrete variables.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to talk or hear. The associate frequently is required to walk and use hands to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone. The associate is occasionally required to stand, sit, and reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl. The associate must occasionally lift, and or move 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENT: Jobsite locations vary and travel to jobsites may be up to 25% of assigned duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an associate encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work environment typically consists of an office environment, as well as visiting job sites which can include ongoing construction sites, existing operating facilities, mechanical, electrical, and equipment rooms. During job site visits the associate can be exposed to wet and/or humid, areas with moving mechanical parts, elevated areas, excessively warm/cold, areas with high nose, and areas where there is the potential for electric shock or injury from operating machinery. All personal protective equipment shall be worn in all areas where required, and shall be provided to the associate by the company.
