Job Description

Duties:

Under the direction of Administration, the responsibilities of this position is to provide diagnostic services, resources, and supplemental reading intervention for selected at-risk students.

As a teacher, the reading specialist is responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers, to enable students to develop literacy skills.

Required Qualifications:

Candidate should hold or be willing to hold an endorsement as a Reading Specialist. Be certified or willing to become certified in Spalding.

Candidate should provide evidence of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was the primary responsibility is preferred.

Candidate must demonstrate an enduring love of youth, love of teaching and learning, and a desire to work in a faith-based atmosphere aligned with values taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Successful candidates will also demonstrate strong communication and classroom management skills, high energy, experience in preparing and delivering daily lesson plans, experience establishing and communicating clear learning objectives, ability to use a variety of pedagogical methods, and willingness to learn. Candidates should be professional in appearance and demeanor.

Candidate must also be willing and able to uphold and serve as ambassadors for the AHS Mission, Honor Code, and Diversity Statement on and off campus. Position available immediately.

  • ability to distill knowledge into concepts and principles-statements of truth that can readily be applied to a wide variety of circumstances.
  • strong oral skills, including the ability to present information in an engaging, way with pacing that moves quickly and doesn't drag.
  • strong written communication skills, including the ability to create and post assignments with clear instructions, models, and rubrics.
  • strong classroom management skills, including the ability to stay organized and implement routines that are purposeful and effective.
  • a habit of communicating with teachers, and when needed with parents, in ways that are timely, collaborative, precise, helpful, and positive.
  • experience in preparing and facilitating daily tutoring plans.
  • experience in establishing and communicating clear learning objectives to students.
  • ability to use a variety of pedagogical methods that engage students in active reasoning and relating.
  • experience monitoring and reporting progress to parents.
  • Special education training (for teaching students with specific learning disabilities) is helpful, but is not required.
