Job Description

The CT Tech 2 performs advanced computed tomography procedures to produce high-quality diagnostic images with a high level of technical competence and clinical autonomy. This position performs a full range of CT procedures-including advanced reconstructions, neurovascular CTA, trauma imaging, biopsies, drainage procedures, and sterile contrast studies-while supporting the department through quality assurance activities, interdepartmental committee involvement, and participation in policy and procedure implementation. The CT Tech 2 serves as a departmental preceptor and resource, assisting with the onboarding and training of new staff. Independent judgment, technical proficiency, and strong clinical decision-making skills are required to ensure safe and effective use of ionizing radiation for diagnostic purposes. The technologist assumes responsibility for designated areas, ensures quality and safety standards, and supports daily workflow within the CT department. All responsibilities are carried out in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform advanced CT procedures according to established protocols, including neurovascular studies, advanced reconstructions, trauma imaging, and interventional support.
  • Exercise professional judgment while maintaining a calm, patient-focused demeanor that complements high-quality care delivery.
  • Independently position patients and operate CT scanners to obtain optimal diagnostic images with minimal retakes.
  • Administer contrast agents following safety guidelines, verifying patient history and screening results.
  • Assist with biopsies, drainages, and sterile contrast studies while maintaining proper sterile technique.
  • Support departmental quality assurance, including image review, protocol adherence, documentation, and equipment checks.
  • Act as a preceptor by training, coaching, and guiding CT staff, students, and new hires on procedures and equipment usage.
  • Collaborate with leadership on implementing departmental policies, procedures, and workflow improvements.
  • Participate in interdepartmental committees, contributing to process improvement and patient-care initiatives.
  • Document all imaging procedures, patient data, contrast usage, and equipment information accurately within the electronic medical record.
  • Support department operations by assisting colleagues and completing additional tasks assigned by leadership.
  • Document accurately in the EMR/RIS/PACS: patient assessments, imaging details, contrast usage, dose indices, and procedural notes.
  • Maintain room cleanliness and readiness by stocking supplies, checking equipment functionality, performing routine QC testing, and troubleshooting issues as they arise

Education

  • Technical Program- Radiologic Technology
  • Associate's Degree in Radiologic Science

License/Registration- Issued by Florida or Compact State

  • Radiology Technologist

Certification

  • Registered American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) as a Radiation Therapy (RT), Nuclear Medicine (NM) or Radiography (R)
  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) RT (N)
  • CT Registry required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Work Experience and Additional Information

  • One (1) year progressive responsibility within a CT diagnostic imaging department.

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in performing advanced CT studies, including neurovascular CTA and 3D/advanced-level recons.
  • Skilled in scanner operation, troubleshooting, workflow optimization, and supporting QA/maintenance tasks.
  • Competent in IV contrast utilization, administering contrast safely, and evaluating patient responses and contraindications.
  • Able to identify imaging artifacts, equipment performance issues, and patient-related challenges and resolve them efficiently.
  • Experienced in explaining complex procedures, alleviating patient anxiety, collaborating with radiologists and clinical teams, and supporting strong, service-focused communication.
  • Capable of independently managing workflow, supporting multiple imaging locations, prioritizing urgent needs, and adapting seamlessly within dynamic clinical environments
