Job Description

CTE Teacher & Safety Specialist

Ready to step off the line and shape the next generation of lineworkers?

Great Lakes Energy is seeking an experienced lineworker or utility professional to join our team in Boyne City as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teacher & Safety Specialist. In this unique role, you'll bring your real-world field experience into the classroom-teaching the next generation of energy professionals-while also supporting critical safety and loss control initiatives across the organization.

Who We Are

For over 85 years, Great Lakes Energy has powered rural communities across 26 counties in western and northern Michigan. As the third-largest Michigan-based electric utility and the state's largest member-owned power company, we serve over 128,000 meters with pride. Beyond delivering reliable electricity, we are leaders in advanced fiber technology through Truestream, our communication solutions subsidiary.

At Great Lakes Energy, we prioritize enriching the lives of our community members and employees. With over 300 team members, we're more than just colleagues-we're a close-knit family, united by a shared vision of growth, innovation, and community service.

A Day in The Life

In this hybrid role, you'll split your time between the classroom and the field, making an impact in both environments. At Boyne City High School, you'll teach Energy Fundamentals, Lineworker, and Drone Technology courses, bringing real-world experience into the classroom and preparing students for careers in the energy industry. Through hands-on instruction and practical application, you'll help students build the skills and confidence to succeed.

Outside the classroom, you'll support the Cooperative's safety culture by contributing to Loss Control initiatives. From promoting safe work practices and delivering training to helping identify and mitigate risks, your work will play a key role in protecting employees, infrastructure, and the communities we serve.

Who You Are

You are a skilled utility professional who enjoys mentoring others and sharing your knowledge. You bring a strong safety mindset, the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly, and a passion for developing the next generation of energy professionals.

You're equally comfortable leading a classroom, working in the field, and collaborating across teams to improve outcomes.

What you Bring...

  • Experience in electric distribution systems, construction, maintenance, and restoration
  • Knowledge of drone technology and flight operations
  • At least 5 years of related utility or lineworker experience
  • FAA Part 107 certification (or ability to obtain) and safety training experience (OSHA/MIOSHA preferred)
  • Associate degree in occupational safety or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong communication, organization, and instructional skills
  • Valid Michigan driver's license; CDL (Group A with air brake endorsement) preferred

What's in It for You?

We believe our people are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect that. From the expected to the exceptional, our offerings are designed to support you and your family at every stage of life. We provide a well-rounded package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, parental leave, adoption assistance, tuition reimbursement, life insurance, and robust retirement plans – just to name a few.
