Position Description

The mission of Anoka County Facilities Management and Construction is to provide a safe, clean, comfortable, and well‑maintained environment at the highest level of excellence for the citizens and employees of Anoka County.

The department is seeking a dedicated Custodian to join our team and support the daily care of Anoka County facilities. In this role, you will help ensure that our buildings, equipment, and public spaces remain safe, clean, comfortable, and well‑maintained for both employees and community members. Custodians perform a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks and may work independently or alongside a team. Assignments can include any county location, such as the Courthouse, Government Center, Highway facilities, Anoka County Sheriff's Office, License Centers, and Corrections facilities.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position. Interviews will take place the week of April 6th, 2026, for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Pay & Benefits

  • Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 20: $36,275.20 to $45,385.60 ($17.44 to $21.82 per hour).

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Government Center, located at 2100 3rd Ave, Anoka, MN 55303. Work assignments may include additional Anoka County locations based on business needs.
  • Expected work hours are Monday- Friday 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Flexible scheduling may be available based on business needs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Custodian.

  • Work alone or with a team to perform all custodial duties in any assigned location and maintain a basic daily routine including tasks such as trash pick-up, recycling, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, restroom cleaning, and washing glass entryways and terrazzo floors.
  • Perform weekly or recurring cleaning and maintenance tasks such as carpet cleaning, dusting, and other basic maintenance, using extractors and auto scrubbers for floor care, and cleaning hallways, stairs, and office spaces.
  • Complete extra cleaning duties in all areas as assigned, including providing support cleaning of twelve on/offsite facilities along with a variety of other locations as needed.
  • Notify supervisor of feedback regarding cleaning/environmental concerns and areas identified for facility improvement, such as the need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Maintain custodial inventory and supplies and provide feedback on the quality of and need for new supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain and consistently apply knowledge of safety and protocol and attend training on proper utilization and maintenance of equipment, emergency protocol/situational awareness, and severe weather procedures.
  • Assist co-workers, county staff, and the public with any custodial or basic facility maintenance needs.
  • Assist in training team members, and share and develop best practices, methods, job knowledge, and other techniques to complete tasks safely, efficiently, and with excellent results.
  • Attend weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings with supervisor and other facilities staff which may include training, status reviews, and coaching/training.
  • Crosstrain to support other areas of the department as business needs require.
  • Respond to on call custodial issues as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Requires a high school diploma.
  • Successfully pass driver's license background check.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Experience cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize multiple daily tasks as directed.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, and outdoor work sites in all weather conditions depending on assignment.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties.
  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing.
  • Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment.
  • Regular lifting of 0-25 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs.
  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to maintenance equipment depending on assignment.
  • Maintenance equipment may include but is not limited to ladders, shovels, power saws, drills, routers, grinders, wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, sewer augers, pipe threaders, pumps, scaffolding, snow and leaf blowers, hand and riding mowers, string trimmer, hand and power tools, vacuum, brooms, floor buffers and scrubbers and other floor cleaning equipment, pallet jacks, push/pull carts, chemicals, and personal protective equipment.
  • Occasional travel to other county work sites as needed.
  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, prolonged vibration from machinery, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties.
