Custodian

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-exempt position that reports to the Manager of Custodial and Event Services and is located at the JWCC campus in Quincy, Illinois. Position begins immediately.

JOB DESCRIPTION

John Wood Community College (JWCC) is seeking a reliable and dedicated Full-Time Custodian to join our Maintenance and Custodial team. The Custodian will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across all college buildings and grounds. The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform daily cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas.
• Remove trash and recycling from designated areas and dispose of it appropriately.
• Restock supplies such as soap, hand sanitizer, paper towels, and toilet tissue in restrooms and other areas.
• Ensure the proper use and maintenance of cleaning equipment and supplies.
• Respond promptly to cleaning requests and other maintenance needs as required by college staff.
• Assist with the setup and breakdown of furniture and equipment for events, meetings, and special functions.
• Perform light maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and reporting any maintenance or safety concerns to the supervisor.
• Support seasonal tasks including snow removal, salting sidewalks, and maintaining exterior areas.
• Minor grounds keeping as needed.
• Follow all safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Experience:

• Previous custodial or maintenance experience is preferred but not required; training will be provided.

Skills and Competencies:

• Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
• Good communication skills and the ability to interact respectfully with a diverse community.
• Physical stamina to perform repetitive tasks, lift up to 50 pounds, and stand or walk for extended periods.
• Must have the ability to sit, stand, walk, run, lift, carry items, and reach for and grasp items with hands and fingers.
• Must have the ability to see potential risks and hazards and try to prevent them at all times.

Work Schedule:

• Full-time position with a typical schedule of Monday-Thursday (8am – 5pm) and Friday (8am – 12pm).

SALARY

• This is a non-exempt position with an approximate hourly rate of $15.00.
