Job Description
The Brearley School is an independent girls’ school serving over 700 students K-12. We welcome candidates to apply for the position of Custodian.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining all facilities to ensure a clean, healthy, and safe environment. Personnel may be required to assist with set-ups as required. All employees will uphold the mission and values established by The Brearley School. Employees must be able to work flexible hours, have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability to meet or exceed the attendance and punctuality standards of The School. FULL TIME, Shift: 2pm- 10:30pm, Monday- Friday, occasional overtime on weekends.
Minimum of 2 years of cleaning experience in a school, commercial or residential environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.
- Must be able to climb ladders and operate manual platform lifts.
- Cleans classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, hallways, common areas, and other interior spaces.
- Floor care, including mopping, stripping, waxing, and carpet extraction.
- Daily trash removal and cleaning of all receptacles.
- Responds to emergency cleanups during the day, such as clogged drains and spills.
- Performs routine maintenance, including painting, replacing light bulbs, etc.
- Performs routine groundskeeping duties, including maintaining sidewalk/play areas and snow removal during inclement weather.
- Setups up and arrange furniture for meetings, assemblies, and special events.
- Secure, protect, and ensure the proper usage and maintenance of all custodial equipment.
- Assists with package deliveries.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Minimum of 2 years of cleaning experience in a school, commercial or residential environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be customer service oriented.
- Ability to use standard tools.
- Ability to understand and follow directions as given.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb ladder and step ladder.
- Bending at the waist, sitting, kneeling, laying horizontally, climbing, walking, etc., as job may require.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Will be working in varying weather and temperature conditions, including but not limited to snow/cold temperatures during the winter and hot temperatures during the summer.
- Noise levels may require normal hearing protection in the form of earplugs.
- Paints and solvents may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment, and a personal fit test may be required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The salary range for the position is $20.00 - $21.00 per hour, depending on experience/qualifications.
