Job Description

Play a critical role in the fight against Jewish hate.

As part of the Robert Kraft Family-Brandeis Initiative on Antisemitism, this 1 to 2-year fellowship offers any recent Brandeis graduate an opportunity to work with Blue Square Alliance Against Hate (BSA). The mission of the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate (BSA) is to win the hearts and minds of non-Jews and Jews through powerful positive messaging and partnerships, motivating and equipping them to be defenders of and upstanders for Jews. BSA focuses on spreading the Blue Square and associated programs to spur action by people of all backgrounds. Working with a network of partners, BSA leverages unique monitoring technology to drive effective rapid response to Jewish hate and all hate, in addition to proactive programs that galvanize popular support for the Jewish community.

The Blue Square Alliance Against Hate aims to inspire and mobilize all people to become upstanders against Jewish hate.

Data Analyst Research Fellow

The Data Analyst Research Fellow will monitor and analyze news and social media to surface insights that inform BSA's day-to-day content strategy, rapid response, and marketing. The Fellow will also produce weekly, publishable research updates for our website that highlight emerging trends in online hate and identify tactics the data suggests can reduce its spread.

As part of the BSA Command Center, the Data Analyst Fellow will strengthen our analytic capabilities by using Python and AI-enabled methods to extract, classify, and summarize insights from unstructured data, including text, images, and other digital content. This work will help BSA detect trends, measure impact, and respond with speed and clarity.

This position reports to Steven Fransblow, BSA Chief Data & Technology Office.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Recent Brandeis undergraduate (all majors encouraged to apply)
  • Curiosity, creativity, and a strong commitment to mission-driven work
  • Comfort analyzing current events and online conversations related to antisemitism
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and create content for newsletters, reports, and presentations
  • Strong research and analytical skills with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrated programming experience, including proficiency in Python for data analysis
  • Proficiency in Google Slides, with the ability to create clear, executive-ready presentations
  • Ability to work with social media data, including unstructured text and images
  • Ability to work with structured datasets in Microsoft Excel, including cleaning and organizing dat and Creating charts and summary tables

Key Responsibilities:

Research and Analysis (60%):

  • Conduct daily research on current events, analyzing news stories involving antisemitic incidents or hate speech, and monitoring real-time social media conversations on antisemitism and synthesizing findings.
  • Develop Python scripts and automated workflows to ingest, classify, and analyze data from our social listening platforms, generating insights and quantifying trends.
  • Create customized monthly reports for community partners about online conversation related to their community, to help them better engage with these topics and fight against prejudice and violence.
  • Identify and analyze long-term trends in online Jewish hate speech, examining variations by source, age, or category as required.
  • Support meetings and develop presentations for stakeholders, visitors, and partner organizations by conducting relevant research and providing insightful analysis.
  • Prepare and analyze BSA market research data in Excel by cleaning datasets, merging files, creating pivot tables and visualizations, and synthesizing results into written insights.

Communication (40%):

  • Collaborate with the content team on messaging for social media responses to recent antisemitism-related events.
  • Produce concise articles for a weekly newsletter educating the public on trends related to antisemitism and providing analysis of emerging online patterns.
  • Engage in special projects, including research and analysis as needed and the synthesis of external research findings, to contribute to organizational objectives.

Salary: This position works in person at the BSA offices at Gillette Stadium! Salary range is $50,000 - $60,000. This is a one year position with the possibility of an additional year extension.
