Job Description

Definition

The Data Center Construction Site Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring a safe, compliant, and highly controlled work environment on mission-critical data center projects. This role focuses on mitigating high-risk activities such as energized electrical work, heavy rigging, confined spaces, and critical infrastructure installations while maintaining strict adherence to OSHA regulations, client safety standards, and data center–specific protocols.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and enforce site-specific safety plans tailored to data center construction
  • Lead new-hire orientations, trade onboarding, and recurring safety stand-downs
  • Actively coach project team members and associated subcontractors to correct unsafe behaviors
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions aligned with client reporting requirements
  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready documentation in client EHS platforms and project systems
  • Monitor high-risk activities including electrical installations, commissioning support, heavy lifts, crane operations, and confined space entry
  • Enforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), arc flash boundaries, energized work permits, and electrical safety programs
  • Conduct daily safety walks, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Permit-to-Work reviews
  • Lead safety orientations, toolbox talks, and trade-specific safety training
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA (29 CFR 1926), NFPA 70E, and client safety standards
  • Coordinate safety efforts with general contractors, subcontractors, commissioning agents, and owner representatives
  • Coordinate crane operations, heavy rigging, and material handling in live environments
  • Monitor commissioning, pre-functional testing, and system energization activities
  • Investigate incidents, near-misses, and safety observations; lead corrective and preventive actions
  • Maintain detailed safety documentation including permits, inspections, training records, and incident reports
  • Stop work immediately when imminent danger conditions are identified
  • Support emergency response planning, drills, and site-specific emergency action plans
  • Coordinate incident response with site leadership and client representatives
  • Ensure emergency equipment, signage, and access controls meet hyperscale standards
  • Participate in client audits, inspections, and safety leadership walks

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (required); construction management or safety degree preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of safety experience on large-scale or mission-critical construction projects
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards and electrical safety requirements
  • Demonstrated experience enforcing safety protocols in fast-paced, high-risk environments
  • Ability to communicate clearly and assertively with all levels of project personnel

Required / Preferred Certifications

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction (required)
  • NFPA 70E Certification (strongly preferred)
  • CHST or equivalent safety certification
  • First Aid / CPR / AED (required)
  • Rigging & Signal Person Certification
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Arc Flash Awareness

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to walk large, active data center sites for extended periods
  • Ability to access elevated work areas, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and tight technical spaces
  • Comfortable working around energized systems and critical infrastructure (following all safety protocols)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as required
  • Clean motor vehicle records to qualify as a driver
