Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general direction and supervision of the Chief Executive Officer the Dental Director provides comprehensive coordinated preventive dental services to ethnically diverse patient populations across the lifespan. Functions as senior management team member to lead and manage the center's dental program.

Essential Functions

  • This position requires compliance with MSHS' compliance standards, including the Code of Conduct, Compliance Program, and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element considered as part of the regular performance evaluation.
  • Provides direct patient care by providing dental services in accordance with training, experience and licensure. This may include preventative and restorative care.
  • Recommends and/or administers medications in accordance with standards of care adopted by the Alaska State Board of Dental Examiners and policies of MSHS.
  • Within agency established time frame completes or supervises the completion of all necessary documentation of visits, referrals, insurance verification and any other paperwork that may be a part of the dental visit.
  • Meets patient care productivity requirements as may be set by the Center to meet requirements of outside funding and/or reimbursement sources
  • Handles protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
  • Establishes and maintains the necessary infrastructure to operate the dental program efficiently and effectively.
  • Leads, directs and coordinates dental services with the center's and the community's providers to ensure the delivery of integrated, comprehensive primary care services.
  • Oversees, monitors, creates and/or updates the center's dental policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Develops a collaborative dental department team.
  • Provides effective day-to-day supervision of direct report ancillary dental personnel. This includes recommendations for hire of personnel, timely performance evaluations, and recommendations for discipline or termination.
  • Oversee with administration the credentialing and privileging of dental staff.
  • Participates in the strategic planning for the organization
  • Participates in the development of departmental budget. Monitors this budget on monthly basis to maintain budgetary balance.
  • Participates in quality assurance program development and implementation.
  • Participates in community outreach and education efforts as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Nonessential Functions

  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures for Agency programs.
  • Provides training and educational seminars to Agency staff.
  • Other position-related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily inside a heated, ventilated, and well-lighted environment.
  • May routinely encounter exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment. Use of appropriate protective measures is required.
  • MSHS is a non-smoking campus.

Physical Demands

  • Physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with the practice of modern dentistry will be performed on a repetitive basis.
  • Prolonged sitting or standing may be required.
  • Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with the staff and public.
  • Requires speaking, sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting under 50 lbs.
