This position is housed within the Lance College of Mines and Engineering, known for its dedication to engineering, science, and innovation. The Department Head will oversee the academic and administrative functions of the department while providing visionary leadership to advance excellence in teaching, research, and service. There is a strong emphasis on fostering industry collaboration, especially in the fields of natural resources, critical materials, and energy, as well as future-proofing departmental programs to prepare students for the evolving impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.The Computer Science Department resides in the Lance College of Mines and Engineering at Montana Tech, which stands out for its focus on engineering and technical innovation. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Network Administration, and Web Development. Faculty and students collaborate closely with industry stakeholders, particularly in the natural resources, critical materials, and energy sectors, to contribute solutions and innovations to real-world challenges. The department is focused on future-proofing academic programs and equipping students with the skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven worldDuties:
  • Lead the Computer Science Department by overseeing strategic planning, accreditation, curriculum development, faculty mentorship, and resource management.
  • Strategically adapt and evolve departmental programs to ensure alignment with the rapid advancements in technology, including AI-driven innovations.
  • Incorporate initiatives that position future graduates to succeed in industries influenced by AI, automation, and other technological transformations.
  • Strengthen partnerships between the department and industries, especially in natural resources, critical materials, and energy, to enhance research opportunities and student career development.
  • Identify and pursue collaboration opportunities with industry stakeholders to address technical challenges and innovative solutions in these sectors.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and align departmental goals with Montana Tech’s mission and strategic initiatives.
  • Design and deliver computer science and software engineering courses at the undergraduate level to meet the evolving needs of students and industry.
  • Develop and sustain a productive research program, with an emphasis on securing external funding to advance research initiatives.
  • Promote student experiential learning through industry partnerships and project-based opportunities.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate effectively within academic or professional environments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • A proven record of academic accomplishments, including research and teaching experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive experience in leadership roles within academia or industry.
  • Expertise in accreditation processes and assessment practices.
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in areas such as cybersecurity or software engineering.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating partnerships with industry to support research or development, particularly those related to natural resources, critical materials, or energy projects.
  • A track record of developing programs that incorporate emerging technologies, such as AI, machine learning, and related subjects, to meet future workforce demands.
