| Summary: | The Design Engineer is active in all Pre-Design, Design and Process Release stages of new tooling jobs. The Design Engineer may estimate and design new tooling. |
- Creates a process of a new tooling production job including all operations needed to produce the customer's part.
- Processes Direct buy/Subcontract assignments for tooling orders upon completion of the designs.
- Determines sequence and number of die stages in which single or progressive cutting, punching, and forming will be accomplished, and type of dies required to produce a complete part, based on knowledge of dies, forming processes, and machines.
- Organizes and schedules Pre-Design and Process Release meetings.
- Surveys and qualifies outside vendors for designing and building of dies.
- Responsible for customer engineering changes and blueprint revision notifications.
- Responsible for file storage and transfer of die designs and CNC programs.
- Estimates tooling costs using customer information, material and labor costs and any outside source work. Inputs all information in ERP System including prices and sources.
- Follow all applicable safety policies and procedures when working in the plant.
- (May) observe a setup and/or tryout of a newly developed die in a production machine to determine need for re-design or readiness for production use.
- Ability to reverse engineer and create electronic prints of existing die sets
- Bachelors preferred otherwise Trade school or minimum 5 year experience required
- Proficient in Solidworks, Excel, Word, and AutoCAD.
- Accommodation as required for reading computer screens, instruments, blue prints and documents.
- Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action.
- High noise levels from operating machines
- Physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts
- Breathing fumes, dust and mist
- Skin exposure to oils and cutting fluid
