Job Description

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the safe operation, repair, rebuilding, and maintenance of company-owned or leased heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment, including rolling stock. The primary goal is to ensure all equipment is in top condition and operates safely at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintenance & Repair: Diagnose and repair operational difficulties with heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment. This includes maintaining and repairing heavy diesel, CNG, gas, and electrically operated equipment and vehicles.

  • Planning & Scheduling: Plan and schedule repairs using the M5 planner and procure all necessary parts for successful job completion.

  • Administrative Duties: Complete reports, work orders, and order parts daily. Assist in reviewing mechanical write-ups and coordinating repair schedules.

  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure safe working conditions and compliance with all safety regulations and federal, state/provincial, and local laws.

  • Training: Assist in the training and orientation of new employees.

  • Continuous Learning: Maintain working knowledge of the latest technology through technical manuals, seminars, and testing.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED; a technical diploma is preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a diesel mechanic.

  • Technical Skills: Experience using diagnostic software is a plus. Must be computer literate and willing to be trained on new software systems.

  • Safety Standards: Must meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions, work independently, and maintain accurate records.

  • Ability to understand and use repair and parts manuals written in English.

  • Ability to operate all vehicles and equipment necessary for the job.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Physical Effort: Must be able to stand, walk, climb, and lift/push/pull up to 100 pounds.

  • Environment: Frequent exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and varying weather conditions (hot/cold/humid).

  • Tools: Must possess, provide, and maintain the tools necessary for heavy/hydraulic equipment maintenance.
