Job Description

Position Summary:

The Director of Clinical Education provides operational leadership for third- and fourth-year clinical education at the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM). Reporting to the Associate Dean for Clinical Education, this role develops, directs, and oversees the systems, processes, and partnerships that support core clerkships, electives, and regional clinical campus operations. The Director ensures clinical rotation experiences meet MSOM curriculum requirements and accreditation standards, supports preceptors and clinical sites, and advances continuous quality improvement across the clinical education program. Overall, the role provides day-to-day operational leadership for MSOM clinical education.

Reports to: Associate Dean for Clinical Education

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Office of Clinical Education, ensuring effective administration of departmental functions, regional clinical campuses, and affiliated clinical training sites.
  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate Clinical Education Coordinators and other assigned staff; promote accountability, professional growth, and efficient departmental workflows.
  • Direct clinical capacity planning, student placement, and rotation scheduling processes to ensure alignment with curricular requirements, graduation standards, and required clinical learning experiences.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and continuous refinement of student and preceptor onboarding processes, including fulfillment of institutional and site-specific compliance requirements.
  • Maintain oversight of clinical site and preceptor records, including affiliation agreement status, credentialing elements, onboarding requirements, availability, and other operational data necessary to support clinical placements.
  • Collaborate with clerkship directors, course leadership, and institutional partners to support the consistent implementation of clerkship curricula, learning objectives, syllabi, and assessment processes across all clinical education sites.
  • Ensure operational compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and regulatory expectations related to clinical education; maintain documentation and supporting evidence for accreditation review and continuous quality assurance.
  • Oversee the administration of clinical education evaluations, assessments, and end-of-rotation processes, ensuring timely execution, data integrity, confidentiality, and appropriate reporting.
  • Lead continuous quality improvement efforts within clinical education operations through performance monitoring, dashboard development, trend analysis, and coordination of site improvement or remediation efforts as needed.
  • Serve as a primary operational liaison for clinical education, facilitating communication and coordination among students, faculty, clinical partners, and internal offices, while supporting policy development, issue escalation, committee participation, and departmental resource planning.
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement, faculty development, student support, and career development efforts, including participation in initiatives related to learner success, residency preparation, and program enhancement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree or higher preferred (e.g., MBA, MHA, MPH, MEd, MS).
  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in clinical education administration, medical education, academic health administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex operational processes (e.g., scheduling, onboarding, evaluations) with attention to detail and strong customer service orientation.
  • Experience with affiliation agreements/contract management and maintaining documentation, renewals, and compliance tracking.
  • Familiarity with accreditation expectations and documentation practices relevant to undergraduate medical education clinical training (osteopathic or allopathic).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with physicians, health system leaders, faculty, students, and administrative teams.
  • Ability to analyze data, develop reports/dashboards, and use findings to drive quality improvement.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Office 365) and collaboration platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams); comfort learning clinical education software systems and utilizing artificial intelligence platforms.
  • Ability to travel regularly to clinical sites and regional campuses and occasionally work outside of standard hours to support clinical education operations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and a student-centered approach to clinical education.
