Director of Electrical Engineering

The Director of Electrical Engineering leads the electrical engineering practice by driving business development, providing technical authority, and overseeing delivery across utility infrastructure sectors, with emphasis on Transmission & Distribution (T&D), substations, protection engineering, and control & integration engineering services. This role serves as the organization's subject-matter expert in electrical utility engineering and supports division-wide growth, client expansion, and operational excellence.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead business development efforts for utility electrical engineering services. 
  • Identify, pursue, and secure new opportunities in Transmission and Distribution (T&D), substations, and utilities. 
  • Build, maintain, and expand relationships with utilities, developers, contractors, and strategic partners. 
  • Lead the technical strategy for pursuits, proposals, RFP responses, scopes, and capture plans. 
  • Support the growth of major utility accounts and long-term contract programs. 
  • Represent the firm in client meetings, industry events, and business development activities. 
  • Serve as the technical authority for electrical utility engineering. 
  • Direct the electrical engineering design, studies, and analysis for substations, transmission, and distribution systems. 
  • Oversee the quality, budget, and schedule performance of electrical engineering deliverables. 
  • Review and approve calculations, plans, specifications, studies, and reports. 
  • Ensure compliance with client standards and applicable codes, including NEC, NESC, NFPA, and IEEE requirements. 
  • Lead the development of electrical engineering standards, procedures, and quality programs. 
  • Collaborate with project managers, market leaders, chief engineers, business development directors, and VPs on delivery strategies and execution. 
  • Support contract administration, scope development, requests for information (RFIs), and engineering change management. 
  • Mentor engineering staff to strengthen technical capabilities across the team. 
  • Drive innovation, standardization, and continuous improvement in tools, workflows, and delivery practices. 

Qualifications:  

  • BS. in Electrical Engineering required; advanced degree preferred.
  • PE license required; NCEES Record preferred.
  • 10-15+ years of electrical engineering experience required.
  • Strong utility and power delivery experience required.
  • Significant experience in substations, transmission, and distribution systems required.
  • Strong business development experience required, including proposals, RFP strategy, technical scoping, and client relationship management.
  • Demonstrated success supporting or growing major utility contracts and programs.
  • Strong knowledge of protection engineering and control & integration engineering services.
  • Proficiency with applicable engineering and study tools such as ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, CYME, CYMCAP, PowerWorld, XGSLab, CDEGS, and PLS-CADD, as applicable.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC, IEC, IEEE, NFPA, NETA, and client-specific utility standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong understanding of project delivery, contract administration, and technical proposal strategy.
