Director of Safety

Canyon State Electric

Tempe, Arizona

Are you a passionate safety leader ready to shape a stronger, safer future for an award-winning electrical construction company?

At Canyon State Electric, we've been a trusted name in Arizona's commercial electrical industry since 1978. As an employee-owned (ESOP) company, we truly put our people first - because we know that when our team feels safe, supported, and valued, everyone succeeds.

We're looking for an experienced Director of Safety who wants to lead from the front, build a proactive safety culture, and develop talent across our operations. This is a hands-on leadership role where your expertise will directly protect lives, reduce risk, and drive continuous improvement in electrical construction environments.

Why You'll Want to Lead Safety at Canyon State Electric:

  • Make a visible impact by developing and owning a company-wide safety program tailored to electrical subcontracting.
  • Lead and mentor a team while influencing every level of the organization - from apprentices to executives.
  • Join a stable, employee-owned company with a fun, supportive culture and real opportunities for long-term growth.
  • Enjoy excellent compensation, outstanding benefits, and the tools/resources you need to succeed.
  • Be part of a company that lives its core values: Community, Dependability, Innovation, Positivity, Quality, and Safety.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop and manage a robust Safety Management System (SMS) designed specifically for electrical construction.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Pre-Task Plans (PTPs), and site-specific risk assessments.
  • Lead thorough incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA 1926, NFPA 70E, NEC, DOT, EPA, and all applicable regulations.
  • Design and deliver high-quality training programs for apprentices, journeymen, foremen, and project managers (including electrical safety, OSHA 10/30, CPR/First Aid, and leadership development).
  • Oversee the Learning Management System (LMS) to track certifications and training renewals.
  • Lead a team of safety coordinators and trainers while mentoring and developing internal talent.
  • Perform regular job site audits, safety walks, and inspections across Arizona projects.
  • Collaborate with project teams during pre-construction to integrate safety into every plan.
  • Analyze safety metrics (TRIR, DART, near-misses) and present actionable insights to leadership.
  • Represent the company professionally during regulatory inspections and correspondence.
  • Champion a proactive, behavior-based safety culture where everyone feels accountable and empowered.

Location: Tempe, AZ (with travel to job sites and regional offices as needed)

What We Offer You:

  • Industry-leading pay+ discretionary incentive plan
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) - you own a piece of the company
  • Generous benefits package, including one health insurance plan at $0 cost to the employee
  • 401(k) with 6% company match, 100% vested after 6 months
  • 3 weeks of Vacation/PTO starting your first year
  • Paid holidays beginning immediately
  • Yearly boot voucher
  • Tools and technology you need to succeed (including safety management software and training support)
  • Fun, employee-oriented culture with opportunities to give back to the community
  • Stable, long-term career with excellent growth and advancement potential

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 10+ years of safety and training experience in electrical or construction industries, with at least 5+ years in a leadership role
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and construction safety best practices
  • Hands-on experience with energized work, trenching, confined spaces, and elevated work
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver effective technical and soft-skills training programs
  • OSHA 500 and OSHA 510 certifications required - please upload both certificates along with your resume
  • OSHA 30 (Construction) and First Aid/CPR Instructor certification required
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), CHST, CUSP, or equivalent preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, safety software (e.g., SafetyCulture), and LMS platforms
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and coaching skills with the ability to influence at all levels
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Willingness to travel to job sites as needed
