Director, Strategic Communications & Media Relations (Contract – Through February)
Location: New York, NYWorksite: Hybrid – Monday through Thursday in office, Fridays remoteHours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (35 hours/week with up to a 1-hour unpaid lunch)Pay Rate: $60–$90/hourContract Duration: Through February
Our client is seeking an experienced Director of Strategic Communications & Media Relations to provide interim leadership and strategic communications support during a critical period. This temporary role will help advance the organization’s mission and public profile while supporting major global events, including New York Climate Week, IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings, COP31, and the World Economic Forum.
Reporting to the Managing Director of Media Relations, this role will serve as a key leader on the Communications team, driving integrated communications strategies, managing media relations initiatives, overseeing complex projects, and partnering closely with senior leadership and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute strategic communications and media relations plans aligned with organizational goals
- Draft press releases, talking points, briefing materials, statements, media advisories, and digital content
- Build and maintain relationships with national and international media contacts, journalists, and producers
- Support executive communications, spokesperson opportunities, and high-profile media engagements
- Lead communications strategies around major events and key organizational initiatives
- Manage multiple projects, deadlines, and external communications partners
- Provide strategic guidance on messaging, advocacy, and external engagement opportunities
- Track media coverage, engagement, and communications outcomes
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop narratives and amplify organizational priorities
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Policy, Political Science, Global Affairs, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- 7–10+ years of experience in strategic communications, media relations, public affairs, or related roles
- Proven success developing and executing communications strategies with measurable outcomes
- Strong media relationships and demonstrated ability to secure high-impact coverage
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex information
- Experience advising senior executives and managing multiple workstreams
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of climate policy, global affairs, philanthropy, development finance, public-private partnerships, or related areas preferred
