Director of Technology - Enterprise Integrations

The Director, Enterprise Integrations is a senior technology leader accountable for transforming and modernizing the enterprise integration landscape. This role leads the evolution from generations of legacy integration patterns, point-to-point, batch, and tightly coupled middleware, to a scalable, secure, and resilient API-centric, event-driven integration model that enables business agility, platform reuse, and accelerated digital delivery.

This leader defines and executes the enterprise middleware and integration strategy, establishes modern integration standards and reference architectures, and ensures consistent, high-quality delivery across business domains. As a member of the Technology Extended Leadership Team, the Director partners closely with application, platform, data, and business leaders to ensure integration capabilities are treated as foundational enterprise products, not just enabling infrastructure. The role is responsible for strategy, execution, operational excellence, talent development, and vendor partnerships across the middleware and integration ecosystem.

LOCATION: This role follows our hybrid flex model - three days in our Newport News, VA headquarters and two days remote. We welcome applicants from outside the area and offer relocation assistance.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy & Vision

  • Define and own the enterprise integration and middleware strategy, with a clear roadmap to modern, API-first and event-driven architectures.
  • Lead the modernization of legacy integration technologies and patterns, reducing complexity, technical debt, and operational risk.
  • Establish enterprise integration reference architectures, standards, and guardrails aligned to broader Technology strategy.
  • Partner with Technology and business leadership to ensure integration capabilities enable prioritized business outcomes.

Architecture & Delivery

  • Oversee the design, development, and delivery of middleware and integration solutions across the enterprise.
  • Drive adoption of API management, service orchestration, event streaming, and messaging platforms as appropriate.
  • Ensure integrations meet enterprise requirements for scalability, security, reliability, observability, and performance.
  • Enable reuse through well-designed APIs, shared services, and domain-aligned integration products.
  • Collaborate with application, data, and cloud teams to ensure seamless end-to-end solution delivery.

Operational Excellence

  • Establish and enforce integration lifecycle management practices, including versioning, governance, and deprecation.
  • Define and track meaningful metrics for availability, performance, throughput, reliability, and business value.
  • Lead efforts to improve stability, resiliency, and incident response across middleware platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with security, SOX, and enterprise risk management standards.

Leadership & Talent

  • Build, lead, and develop high-performing middleware and integration teams with a modern, product-centric mindset.
  • Recruit, retain, and grow top technical talent, creating clear career paths and development opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and innovation.
  • Coach leaders and engineers to challenge legacy thinking and accelerate delivery of business capabilities.

Vendor & Financial Management

  • Own the middleware and integration vendor strategy, including selection, contract management, and performance oversight.
  • Manage operating and capital budgets aligned to strategic priorities.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and partners to ensure the organization remains current and competitive.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of senior IT leadership experience, with responsibility for large-scale platforms or shared services.
  • Proven experience modernizing enterprise integration landscapes and reducing legacy dependency.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts to business and executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams through significant technology and organizational change.
  • Demonstrated leadership of diverse, multi‑location teams (such as managing 11 direct and about 120 indirect team members, with ~40 in India).
  • Demonstrated experience defining and maturing API platforms and integration layers over legacy systems.
  • Hands-on leadership experience with modern integration technologies (e.g., API gateways, event streaming, messaging platforms).
  • Experience delivering solutions in cloud and hybrid environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Solid background in Agile, DevOps, and product-oriented delivery models.
  • Experience managing strategic vendors and complex sourcing models.
  • Track record of improving platform stability while accelerating delivery speed.

Leadership Characteristics

  • Strategic thinker with a bias toward action and outcomes.
  • Comfortable challenging the status quo and legacy paradigms.
  • Collaborative partner who models what it means to be a strong technical and business leader.
  • Curious, continuously learning, and passionate about modern engineering practices.
