Job Description

Division Chief, Thoracic Surgery

Tufts Medical Center | Tufts Medicine | Boston, Massachusetts

At Tufts Medicine, every member of our team plays an essential role in delivering exceptional, compassionate care. We are committed to advancing patient care through innovation, collaboration, education, and discovery.

The Department of Surgery at Tufts Medical Center is seeking an accomplished academic thoracic surgeon to serve as Division Chief of Thoracic Surgery. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead and grow a distinguished academic division within one of New England's premier integrated academic health systems.

The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for the Division's clinical, educational, research, and faculty development missions while partnering closely with Department, Cancer Center, and health system leadership to expand regional access, strengthen multidisciplinary programs, recruit exceptional faculty, and advance innovation in thoracic surgery.

Why Tufts Medicine?

Lead the next chapter of an outstanding academic division

The Division of Thoracic Surgery has a long tradition of excellence in the surgical treatment of thoracic and esophageal disease. Our program includes a highly successful minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery practice and is recognized for providing outstanding care to patients with complex benign and malignant thoracic conditions.

As Division Chief, you will have the opportunity to build upon this strong foundation by expanding clinical programs, strengthening regional partnerships, recruiting exceptional faculty, growing research initiatives, and shaping the future of thoracic surgery across Tufts Medicine.

Integrated cancer care

The Tufts Cancer Center is redefining cancer care through an integrated academic model that brings together four hospital-based cancer programs under a single mission. Combining the strengths of one academic medical center with three community cancer centers, we provide comprehensive cancer care across eastern Massachusetts through prevention, early diagnosis, innovative treatment, research, survivorship, and education.

Multidisciplinary excellence

Our thoracic surgeons work collaboratively with specialists in Pulmonary Medicine, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Gastroenterology, Interventional Pulmonology, Radiology, Pathology, Critical Care, and Rehabilitation Medicine to develop individualized treatment plans for patients with the most complex thoracic diseases. This highly collaborative approach ensures timely access to the latest therapies and exceptional patient outcomes.

Research and innovation

The Division of Thoracic Surgery provides patients access to innovative therapies through institutional and national clinical trials. Faculty are actively engaged in translational and clinical research focused on thoracic oncology, minimally invasive surgery, and novel therapeutic approaches, while collaborating across disciplines to advance the science of thoracic disease.

Education

Tufts Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital of the Tufts University School of Medicine, is home to an ACGME-accredited two-year Thoracic Surgery Residency that accepts one resident annually. The Division Chief will play a central role in resident education, faculty development, curriculum innovation, and mentoring the next generation of academic thoracic surgeons.

Who You Are

  • An accomplished academic thoracic surgeon with demonstrated success in clinical program development and leadership.
  • A visionary physician leader committed to advancing excellence in patient care, education, research, and innovation.
  • An outstanding mentor with a proven record of developing faculty, trainees, and future leaders.
  • Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery.
  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level at the Tufts University School of Medicine.
  • A collaborative leader who builds high-performing, diverse, and inclusive teams.
  • Committed to accountability, quality, innovation, and continuous performance improvement.
  • A physician who leads with integrity, emotional intelligence, and exceptional communication skills.

Compensation

The anticipated annual compensation range for this position is $610,000.00-$750,000.00, commensurate with experience, academic accomplishments, leadership background, and internal equity.

At Tufts Medicine, we view this investment not simply as compensation, but as recognition of the impact our physician leaders have on advancing patient care, research, education, and the future of our health system
