Job Description

Job Title: Division Controller

Status: Full-time/Exempt

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Work Schedule: M-F (flexible hours)

Compensation: $135,000-140,000 per year

This pay range encompasses multiple levels of the role. Career level and compensation depends on applicants credentials.

Overview:

The Division Controller is a key financial leader responsible for overseeing the financial operations of a designated division as part of Utilitra's contracted services arrangements. This role partners closely with Project Managers, Operations Leadership, and Executive Management to ensure accurate job costing, timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, and informed decision-making. The ideal candidate has construction accounting experience and thrives in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives.
  • Supervise a team of accountants, financial assistants, and other financial staff.
  • Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Financial Planning and Analysis:
    • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close for the division.
    • Provide variance analysis and performance metrics to leadership.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Construction Accounting, & Job Costing:
    • Manage job cost accounting, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
    • Ensure accurate labor costing and payroll allocations.
    • Review and oversee Work-In-Progress (WIP) schedules and percent-complete revenue recognition.
    • Analyze project margins, cost overruns, and under-/over-billings.
    • Partner with Project Managers to proactively identify financial risks and opportunities.
  • Budget Management:
    • Assist CFO with divisional budgeting and rolling forecasts.
    • Support strategic planning, backlog analysis, and resource planning.
    • Evaluate profitability by project, customer, and line of business.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accounting standards.
  • Billing, Accounts Receivable, and Cash Flow Management:
    • Oversee progress billings, change orders, and retainage tracking.
    • Monitor accounts receivable and collections for the division.
    • Coordinate with operations to resolve billing discrepancies and disputes.
    • Monitor cash flow, manage working capital, and ensure the availability of funds for ongoing projects and operations.
  • Risk Management:
    • Identify financial risks and implement strategies to mitigate them.
    • Implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and prevent financial irregularities.
  • Internal Controls & Process Improvement:
    • Maintain strong internal controls across project accounting and financial reporting.
    • Improve financial processes, systems, and reporting tools.
    • Support audits (internal & external).
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration:
    • Lead and mentor divisional accounting staff.
    • Cross-train in all facets of divisional accounting, preparing to fill in for anyone absent.
    • Act as a financial business partner to Operations, Project Management, and Executive Leadership.
    • Support Executive Leadership with ad-hoc analysis and special projects.

The person in this role will uphold the culture of Utilitra, including relationship building with customers as well as general behavior on Utilitra or client premises or at other Utilitra-sponsored events.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (Master's degree and/or CPA is a plus).
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in financial management and accounting, preferably in the utilities or electrical engineering industry.
  • Strong understanding of financial regulations and standards, including GAAP.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP, and revenue recognition under ASC 606.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools, such as ERP systems (Viewpoint preferred) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial data clearly to non-finance partners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extensive reading of both written figures and words, typed reports, and computer screens.
  • Phone communication approximately one (1) hour per day.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods in meetings can be four (4) or more hours each day.
  • Communicating verbally with other staff, contractors, vendors, and customers on a continuous basis.
  • Moving between meetings and buildings to communicate with customers, usually less than one (1) hour per day.
  • Occasional lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasional stooping, reaching or bending.

Travel Requirements:

This role does not require any travel.
