Job Description

Location: Vacaville, CA

We are actively recruiting candidates to participate in our 2026 On-site Internship program. This position is 12 weeks in length and will immerse you in the culture and operations of Lonza Vacaville.

The internship begins in May/June and ends in August. Potential interns must be able to commit to at least 40 hours per week throughout the summer.

The Downstream Frontline Engineering (DSFL) team provides day-to-day engineering support for downstream manufacturing operations, including chromatography, ultrafiltration/diafiltration (UFDF), buffer preparation and hold systems, and supporting utilities. The team also supports new product technology transfers, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives while ensuring safe, compliant, and reliable manufacturing operations.

The Downstream Engineering Intern will support DSFL engineers in learning how large-scale biopharmaceutical processes and equipment operate in a GMP environment. The intern will have a primary focus project, through which they will gain exposure to manufacturing operations, engineering problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and basic documentation practices without requiring deep technical expertise.

What you will get:

The full-time hourly rate for this position is expected to range between $26 -$38. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including the successful candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, experience, and job-related knowledge.

What you will do:

  • Complete a primary focus project to support DSFL MAR Support core work.

  • Support DSFL Engineers with day-to-day engineering and manufacturing support activities assisting with data collection, basic analysis, and documentation related to equipment performance, process issues, or improvement opportunities.

  • Participate in troubleshooting discussions to understand how engineering teams identify and resolve process or equipment issues

  • Gain exposure to working within a GMP environment, including change control, deviation awareness, and documentation practices

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality, MSAT, Automation, and Maintenance to understand how different groups support production

  • Develop a general understanding of downstream biopharmaceutical processes and how engineering supports safe, compliant manufacturing

What we are looking for:

  • Completion of junior year (typically 90 credits) towards a B.S. degree in a related field

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (out of 4) required

  • Must currently be enrolled in BS or MS Academic Program

  • Organized with clear notetaking/documentation

  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety

  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office, Windows)

  • Ability to follow procedures and guidance in a regulated environment

This job position involves working in a laboratory setting with potential hazardous chemicals and other laboratory related hazards. All employees must practice safe work habits, including complying with all safety, health, and environmental rules and regulations.
