Job Description

Emergency Department Tech II (EMT) - Job Description

I. Position Summary

Emergency Department (ED) Tech II (EMT) provides direct and indirect patient care and technical support primarily in the Emergency Department and as assigned on the Medical Surgical floor unit, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Provider. This role emphasizes hands-on clinical support, technical procedures, emergency response, and maintaining readiness of equipment and patient care areas. The ED Tech II plays a key role in supporting our small, often rapidly changing patient census while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality emergency care. The ED Tech II contributes to optimal patient flow, safety, and high-quality emergency care through EMT-level skills and competency-based hospital procedures. The ED Tech works with greater adaptability and situational awareness due to limited resources and the need for coordinated teamwork in emergent situations.

II. Core Functions

A. Clinical Assessment & Patient Care

  • Assist with patient triage, including obtaining/documenting vital signs, oxygen saturation, weight, pain scores, and other assessments within EMT scope.
  • Monitor patients at all acuity levels and promptly report significant changes or abnormal findings to the RN or Provider.
  • Support patient positioning, mobility, lifting, and transport within the ED, radiology, and inpatient units, recognizing the limited ancillary support.
  • Provide comfort measures and support to patients and families during extended wait or transfer times.

B. Technical & Procedural Support

  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and rhythm monitoring as trained.

  • Perform phlebotomy, obtain specimens, and conduct point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose, urinalysis, pregnancy tests) according to competency and policy.

  • Assist with emergency and trauma care procedures including:

  • Wound care, dressing changes

  • Splinting and orthopedic immobilization

  • Assisting with IV starts

  • Preparing and maintaining sterile and procedure setups

  • Provide Basic Life Support (CPR, AED use) and assist with airway support during resuscitations.

  • Participate actively in Code Blue, trauma activations, and other emergency responses.

C. Equipment, Room Readiness & Safety

  • Prepare, stock, and maintain trauma bays and treatment rooms, ensuring equipment is functional and supplies are organized and readily available.
  • Clean, restock, and reset rooms between patients.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot ED equipment within scope (e.g., monitors, suction, oxygen supplies).
  • Always follow infection control standards and safety protocols.

D. Communication & Documentation

  • Document triage forms, procedures, and patient care activities accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the care team while maintaining professionalism, privacy, and compassion.
  • Serve as a supportive team member during high-stress or rapidly evolving patient care situations.

E. Department & Team Support

  • Participate in department huddles, emergency preparedness activities, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of EMT scope, hospital policy, and ED-specific protocols.
  • Demonstrate reliability, situational awareness, and teamwork in the fast-paced emergency environment.
