Job Description

DESCRIPTION

Special Day Class Teacher (SDC)

Provides an educational program for educationally handicapped pupils who are significantly academically delayed in relation to their general ability and who exhibit behavioral, neurological and/or emotional problems of such severity that satisfactory progress cannot be expected in the general education classroom. Also, provides a functional educational program that addresses basic learning skills, basic life/independence skills, and social/emotional issues.

Resource Specialist Teacher (RSP)

In cooperation with the general education classroom teacher, provides an educational program for educationally handicapped pupils who are significantly academically delayed in relation to their general ability and who exhibit behavioral, neurological, and/or emotional problems of such severity that satisfactory progress cannot be expected in the general education classroom without specialized support services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • General Elementary or Standard Elementary Credential for the SDC and RSP teachers. Exceptional Children Credential,or Standard Teaching Credential, Elementary,
  • Bachelor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Specialized training in the area of education of the educationally handicapped for SDC and RSP teachers.
    • Successful student teaching in the area of assignment of a minimum of two years of successful classroom teaching with extensive experience in remedial teaching techniques.
    • Meets District standards for physical and mental health.
    • Good to superior recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    • Specialized course work in the psychological characteristics of exceptional children and remedial techniques in the basic skills subject areas
    • Successful classroom experience in the area of specialization
    • Broad experience in working with pupils requiring specialized education, demonstrated skill in remedial teaching techniques, or applicable clinical experience

    Duties Related to the Instructional Program

    • Diagnoses learning needs of individual pupils

    - Systematically observe children and define their learning problems

    - Administer and interpret selected formal and informal diagnostic- evaluation test and instruments of basic learning skills

    • Plans an appropriate instructional program to meet the diagnosed needs of each pupil

    - Determines appropriate educational objectives and develops prescriptive remedial programs

    • Keeps accurate records of diagnosis, plans and achievements of pupils
    • Develops and selects appropriate teaching techniques, materials, and resources to implement IEP
    • Plans programs that meet requirements of District and State guidelines
    • Evaluates IEP's in terms of individual progress of pupils
    • Keeps pupils, teacher, and parents informed about their individual progress within a framework of District policy
    • Utilizes available personnel resources

    Duties Related to Learning Environment and Classroom

    Management

    • Understanding of CA Standards for the Teaching Profession
    • Recommends and provides a wide variety of teaching materials and resources for pupil use
    • Creates an effective learning environment
    • Maintains school standards in the classroom and throughout the school
    • Respects the belief and background of students
    • Has supportive, accepting attitude toward children and other teachers

    Other Duties and Responsibilities

    • Handles attendance reports, announcements, and other normal routines promptly and efficiently
    • Practices good housekeeping and maintains pleasant surroundings
    • Handles supplies and equipment efficiently and economically
    • Assumes a fair share of other assigned duties related to the instructional program or the operation of the plant
    • Establishes and maintains a suitable room environment through the proper control of heating, lighting and ventilation
    • Is familiar with and supports the District's program and its policies
    • Adheres strictly to the ethics of the teaching profession
    • Honors and respects privileged communication
    • Manifests pride in the profession
    • Establishes and maintains good working relationships and channels of communication with staff members, parents and pupils
    • Participates in school activities which promote positive school-home relations when applicable
    • Seeks suitable opportunities to inform the community of educational programs and needs
    • Takes advantage of opportunities for personal and professional growth when applicable
    • Assumes professional responsibility to assist in the development of the District's educational program
    • Maintains a level of appearance and grooming that establishes a desirable example for pupils
    • Assumes responsibility for observing working and safety conditions throughout the school
