Electrical Engineer

Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the design, safety, reliability, maintenance strategy, and execution of electrical systems supporting manufacturing, cleanroom, facility, and utility operations up to 460 volts. This role serves as the technical authority for electrical safety, arc flash risk management, and electrical system lifecycle management in compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and company Electrical & Arc Flash, Engineering, and Maintenance SOPs.

The Electrical Engineer develops and executes preventive and predictive maintenance programs, supervises and performs electrical repairs, and leads electrical projects for facility, utility, and industrial systems. The role works closely with Maintenance, Controls Engineering, EHS, and Operations to ensure electrical systems are safe, compliant, reliable, and maintainable.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

• Design, review, and approve electrical systems up to 460 V, including power distribution, panels, MCCs, disconnects, grounding, lighting, and protective devices for manufacturing, cleanroom, and facility applications.
• Develop and maintain electrical drawings, schematics, one‑line diagrams, panel schedules, and specifications in accordance with the Engineering SOP.
• Ensure electrical designs incorporate engineering controls to reduce shock and arc flash risk (e.g., current‑limiting devices, selective coordination, remote operation where feasible).
• Provide electrical engineering support for CAPEX projects, including scope definition, technical review, vendor evaluation, and commissioning support.
• Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs for electrical systems, in alignment with the Maintenance SOP.
• Define PM and PdM tasks for: Electrical distribution equipment, Panels, breakers, disconnects, Motors and drives (electrical scope), and Facility and utility electrical systems
• Integrate electrical PM/PdM programs into the CMMS (Fiix), including task frequencies, procedures, and documentation requirements.
• Utilize condition‑based techniques (e.g., thermography, visual inspections, trending, testing data) to support predictive maintenance strategies.
• Review maintenance data, failure trends, and downtime to improve system reliability and safety.
• Supervise and perform electrical troubleshooting, repairs, and corrective maintenance on facility, utility, and industrial electrical systems up to 460 V.
• Provide technical oversight and direction to Maintenance Technicians and contractors performing electrical work.
• Ensure all electrical repairs comply with: Electrical & Arc Flash SOP, Lockout/Tagout requirements, and PPE and approach boundary rules
• Serve as escalation point for complex electrical failures, power quality issues, and safety‑critical electrical events.
• Lead and execute electrical projects including: Panel upgrades and replacements, Power distribution improvements, utility electrical systems, and equipment electrical installations and modifications
• Plan and coordinate project execution, including safety planning, scheduling, contractor supervision, and commissioning.
• Ensure all electrical projects follow engineering change control, safety requirements, and documentation standards.
• Validate electrical installations prior to handover to Operations and Maintenance.
• Maintain accurate and current electrical documentation, including drawings, arc flash labels, and maintenance procedures.
• Ensure electrical system changes follow formal engineering change control.
• Develop and update electrical SOPs, standards, and work instructions.
• Support training and qualification of Maintenance and Engineering personnel related to electrical systems and electrical safety, in coordination with EHS.

EDUCATION AND/OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline required.
• 3-7 years of experience supporting industrial, facility, or manufacturing electrical systems.
• Demonstrated experience with electrical systems up to 460 V.
• Strong working knowledge of: OSHA electrical standards, NFPA 70E, Arc flash hazard analysis, and Electrical PM and PdM.
• Experience supervising electrical work and contractors.
• Familiarity with CMMS systems and maintenance planning.
• Experience in cleanroom or regulated manufacturing environments preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) or NC state electrical license preferred.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

• Familiarity with CMMS systems, SolidWorks and maintenance planning.
• Ability to work with little to no supervision. Must be self motivated.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Regularly stand for extended periods of time.
• Noise level regularly loud.
• Ability to see clearly at 20" or less.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Must keep general housekeeping for the work area, and, proper and safe use and storage of tools and equipment.
• Ability to work in multiple environments such as a combination of office, manufacturing floor, electrical rooms, and utility spaces.
• May require cleanroom gowning and contamination‑control procedures.
• Exposure to energized equipment (controlled), noise, heat, and industrial environments.
• Occasional off‑shift or emergency response support may be required.
• Required use of PPE appropriate to electrical hazard level.

SAFETY & HAZARDS

• Must observe all safety regulations, policies and procedures, and specific departmental rules, when working.
• Occasionally wear safety glasses.
• Regularly use hearing protection.
• Required to wear safety shoes.
• Hazards are remote if safety procedures are followed.
